    Casualties: 433 Total
    Effects: Was the beginning of the end of wooden ships and initiated the first modern war.

    Effects: Considered one of the worst disasters suffered by the Confederacy giving the North control of the New Orleans ports. This gave the North a great advantage

    Effects: Union effectively split the South, and battle was said to be the most brilliant military campaign in the war. Battle boosted Grant's reputation in the North.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    Confederate: Robert E. Lee
    Winner: Union Victory
    Casualties: 51,000 Total
    Effects: Major turning point in the war marking the Union having a chance of winning the war. Union siezed Confederates plan of taking D.C. and defeated them changing the course of the war.
  • Grant's March to Richmond

    Grant's March to Richmond

    Union: Ulysses S. Grant and George G. Meade
    Confederate: Robert E. Lee
    Winner: Union Victory
    Casualties: 88,600 Total
    Effects: Grant's successful attempt in wearing down Lee's army by initiating small battles until Lee retreated to Richmond where Grant forced him to surrender.
  • Sherman's March to the Sea

    Effects: Marked the beginning of the end of the Confederacy. Helped Lincoln gain re-election, Sherman hit the heartland of the Confederacy, damaging it greatly.
