The start of the civil war. On April 10, 1861, Beauregard, demanded the surrender of the Union garrison of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. Anderson refused.

Battle of Bull Run (1st)

It was the first major battle of the Civil War, it was fought in Virginia. On July 16, 1861, the untried Union army under Irvin McDowell marched from Washington against the equally green Confederate army. On the 21, McDowell crossed at Sudley Ford and attacked.Fighting raged throughout the day as Confederate forces were driven back to Henry Hill.

Battle of Hapton Roads

On March 8, 1862, the Confederate ironclad Virginia steamed into Hampton Roads where it sank Cumberland. The two ships fought each other to a standstill, but Virginia retired.

Battle of Shiloh

It was on April 6-7, 1862. Johnston originally planned to attack Grant on April 4, but dit ended up on the 6th. Attacking the Union troops on the morning of the 6th, the Confederates surprised them, routing many. Johnston had been mortally wounded earlier and his second in command, Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard, took over. Fighting continued until after dark. Federals out numbered.

Battle of Antietam

On September 16, 1862, General McClellan and his UnionArmy of the Potomac marched comfronted Robert E. Lee. The day was concidered the bloodiest day in American history. The battle lasted until September 18.

Emancipation Proclamation

Battle of Fredricksburg

The battle was fought December 11-15, 1862, at Fredricksburg, Virginia. Union and Confederate troops fought in the streets of Fredericksburg, the Civil War’s first urban combat. And with nearly 200,000 combatants, no other Civil War battle featured a larger concentration of soldiers.

Siege of Vicksburg

The battle lasted May 18, 1863 through June 4, 1863. Ulysses S. Grant’s armies converged on Vicksburg, attacking the city and trapping a Confederate army under John Pemberton. On July 4, Vicksburg surrendered.

Battle of Gettysburg

The was was December 1-3, 1863 at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. On July 1, Confederate forces converged on the town from west and north, driving Union defenders back through the streets to Cemetery Hill. During the night, reinforcements arrived for both sides. On July 4, Lee began withdrawing his army toward Williamsport on the Potomac River, and ending the Battle of Gettysburg.

Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse

Early on April 9, the remnants of John Brown Gordon’s corps and Fitzhugh Lee’s cavalry formed line of battle at Appomattox Court House. Gen. Robert E. Lee determined to make one last attempt to escape and reach his supplies at Lynchburg. In the morning the Confederates advanced, initially gaining ground against Sheridan’s cavalry. Grant forced Lee to Surrender. This ending the Civil War.

Assassination of Abraham Lincoln

Maryland State ArchivesThe 16th president of the United States of America, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865. Abraham was in Fords Threater in Washington D.C while watching Our American Cousin. He was shot in the head by John Wilkes Booth.
