    It required that all slaves, upon capture, be returned to their owners and that officials and citizens of free states had to cooperate. Anti-slavery states and people refused to follow it and aided in the escape of slaves.
  • Compromise of 1850

    It ended the fight about divisions over slavery in territory gained during the Mexican-American War. It delayed the Civil War by 10 years.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    anti-slavery novel. it revealed the harsh reality of slavery and it opened the eyes of those who were already against slavery.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Bill that allowed settlers of a territory to decide whether slavery would be allowed within the state's borders. It caused citizens who were pro-slavery or anti-slavery to fight with each other.
  • Lincoln's Election

    The South started to secede immediately after his election because they thought he was going to end slavery. Lincoln didn't approve of the spread of slavery, but wasn't planning on ending it.
