  • Bull Run

    Bull Run
    This battle took place in Virginia about 25 miles outside of DC. This was the first major battle of the war. Both sides were lowly skilled and had about 18,000 troops each. The confederate won this first battle.
  • Shiloh

    Shiloh
    This battle took place in southwest Tennessee. Ulysses S Grant led the Union troops into battle here. The Confederates launched a surprise attack on the North which was countered and the North had won this battle. It was also one of the bloodiest battles.
  • 2nd Bull Run

    2nd Bull Run
    Fought at the same place as the first battle of Bull Run. This battle was much larger in scale than the first battle, a lot more people died in the 2nd battle. General Lee of the south won and helped him push further north.
  • Antietam

    This battle was fought in Sharpsburg Maryland and was part of the south's push north early in the war. This was the first battle in the war to take place in the north. It was also the bloodiest battle in American history as 22,000+ people either died, went missing or were wounded.
  • Fredricksburg

    Fredricksburg
    This was a battle between Lee and Burnside as the commanding Generals. It took place in Fredricksburg Pennsylvania. Despite the union losing 3 times the troops the south did they were able to break their line and push them back.
  • Chancellorsville

    Chancellorsville
    This was fought near the town of Chancellorsville in Virginia. The north was lead by Hooker and the south was lead by Lee. The south had half the troops of the north and is considered Lee's perfect battle as he was able to win with a significantly smaller army.
  • Vicksburg

    Vicksburg
    This battle occurred in Vicksburg Mississippi. This was the south last major stronghold and it was a decisive victory for the north. The south held there spot with minimal supplies for over a month but eventually caved in.
  • Gettysburg

    Gettysburg
    This was fought in Gettysburg Pennsylvania. This was a major turning point in the war. General Lee was moving north without much trouble and he was stopped dead in his tracks and forced back south. Approximately 50K people died here and it is where President Lincoln delivered his famous Gettysburg address.
  • Atlanta

    Atlanta
    Fought in Atlanta Georgia. This was part of the North's push into the south to try and finish off the war. They were successful with this as they pushed the south out of Atlanta and had a victory. After the victory the North pushed further into the Souths territory.
  • Petersburg

    Petersburg
    This was fought southwest of Petersburg Virginia. This was near the end of the Civil War and was one of the last major battles. The North launched an attack on the South and out-powered them for a victory.
  • Appomattox Court House

    Appomattox Court House
    This was the final battle of the American Civil War. The North cut of the Souths retreat and they were forced to surrender in the courthouse. Lee tried to launch an attack but it was quickly deterred and therefore the end of the Civil War.
