  • Supreme Court case: Plessy v. Ferguson

    Supreme Court decision that racial segregation is constitutional.
  • Mendez v. Westminster

    Sylvia Mendez 9, her father became a plaintiff in a lawsuit that forced the Westminster school district,
  • Supreme Court case: Brown v. Board of Education

    Supreme Court agreeing that segregation in public schools is unconstitutional.
  • Emmit Till murdered

    14 year old Emmett Till is brutally beaten, shot, and dumped in a River for whistling at a white woman. The 2 men accused of the murder are white.
  • NAACP memeber Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat

    Rosa Parks sparks the boycott by refusing to give up her seat in the front of a bus.
  • The Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Parks was tried and convicted for disorderly conduct and this launched a citywide boycott of the buses.
  • The Little Rock Nine

    Although segregating schools weren't allowed they were still segregated and 9 kids were blocked by the national guard from entering school
  • Greensboro Sit-Ins

    The Greensboro sit-ins were events in the civil rights movement
  • Freedom Riders

    Civil rights activists rode buses to the segregated places in the south to protest civil rights violations.
  • Martin Luther King delivers "I Have a Dream" speech

    Speech about civil rights and the wrongs of segregation.
  • March on Washington

    1/4 of a million people marched down the National Mall in Washington DC
  • 16th Street Baptist Church Bombing

    Four girls are killed when a bomb explodes at the 16th Street Baptist Church planted by the KKK
  • 24th Amendment

    The 24th Amendment abolishes the poll tax which kept african americans from voting
  • Freedom Summer

    Thousands of civil rights workers spread throughout the south to help african americans register to vote
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    The Civil Rights Act of 1964 did not allow forms of discrimination against racial, ethnic, national and religious minorities and women
  • “Bloody Sunday”- March from Selma, AL to Montgomery, AL (1965)

    600 people walk from Selma to Montgomery and with only 6 blocks, walked state police attack them.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    Made it easier for Southern blacks to register to vote.
