    On July 17th, 1861 Mexican President Benito Juarez issued a moratorium. All foreign debt payments would be put off for two years.

    In late 1861, France went into Veracruz. This sent President Juarez and his government into retreat. The French had 8,000 and the Mexicans had 4,000 soldiers.

    On May 5th, 1862 the Mexicans crushed the French.

    In 1863 the French took over Mexico. The new ruler was Maximillian I.

  • US Helps

    1865 the US helped the Mexicans to banish the French.

  • French Rule Ended

    1867 the French rule ended.

    On June 7th, 2005 the US Congress issued a Concurrent Resolution. This told the President to issue a proclamation telling the people of America to observe Cinco de Mayo.
