  • Charlie Perkins is born

    Charles Nelson Perkins, commonly referred to as Charlie Perkins, was born on the 16th of June, 1936 in Alice Springs.
  • Charlie Perkins goes to the University of Sydney to study Arts.

    Charlie Perkins becomes a student at the University of Sydney in 1963 and studies the Bachelor of Arts. Perkins graduates with a Bachelor of Arts in May 1966.

  • The Freedom Ride Tours

    Inspired by the US Civil Rights Activist campaign in 1961, Patten led the Freedom Rides - a bus tour through the Australian state of New South Wales. The campaign targeted small rural towns around New South Wales to bring to light the plight of Aboriginal people.

  • The Prohibition of Discrimination Act makes racial Discrimination illegal in the state of South Australia

    The Prohibition of Discrimination Act. (1966) protected Indigenous Australian against racial discrimination, including the persons country of origin and skin colour. This gave them rights to food, drink, services and accommodation, terminating employment and controlling land without being racial discriminated against.
  • In a Referendum, Australians voted to count Indigenous Australians as citizens

    A referendum called upon by the Holt Government, allowed Australians to vote in a successful attempt to count Indigenous Australians as citizens and agree that the Federal Government should oversee Indigenous Affairs.
  • Racial Discrimination Act. (1975)

    The Racial Discrimination Act. (1975) promoted equality before the law for all persons including Indigenous Australians regardless of their race, colour, descent or place of origin. This act also made the racial discrimination of anyone based on their colour, race, descent or place of origin, unlawful and illegal.
  • Anti-Discrimination Act. (1977)

    The New South Wales Anti Discrimination Act. (1977) related to discrimination in employment, education (public), delivery of goods and services, hospitality and accommodation and even health care. This act prohibits the discrimination of peoples under all circumstances.
  • Perkins is appointed head of the Department of Aboriginal Affairs

    Charlie Perkins was appointed the head (secretary) of the Department of Aboriginal Affairs for four years (1984-1988) after John Taylor (1981-1984).
  • Charlie Perkins is awarded the Order of Australia

    Charlie Perkins is awarded an Officer of the Order of Australia award in 1987.
  • Charlie Perkins is awarded NAIDOC Aboriginal of the Year

    Charlie Perkins is awarded Aboriginal of the Year by NAIDOC. A newspaper article published on Tuesday 6 July, 1993 illustrates that Perkins won an award for NAIDOC Aboriginal of the Year at a ceremony in Alice Springs.

  • Death of Charlie Perkins

    Charlie Perkins died in Sydney on 19 October, 2000 due to renal failure. In the 1970's Perkins had received a kidney transplant and at the time of his death, was the longest post-transplant survivor in Australia.
