  • Freedom Riders

    Charles leads a group of activists of 30 University students from Sydney who set off on a bus protesting against their rights and the fact that as Aboriginals they are being discriminated.
  • University Graduation

    Charles enrolled in Sydney University. At first Charles struggled to keep up with his classes, but he worked hard to become the first ever Aboriginal Australian to Graduate from University.
  • Aboriginals Gain Citizenship

    Australia has voted for allowing Aboriginals to be apart of the census and to allow the Commonwealth to create laws for them. Aboriginals have finally gained citizenship
  • Department of Aboriginal Affairs

    Charles moves to Canberra to join the Department of Aboriginal Affairs
  • Head of Aboriginal Affairs

    Charles Perkins career grows with his role gradually increasing. By 1984 Charles was promoted to Head of the Department of Aboriginal Affairs
  • Resignation

    Charles Perkins resigned from his role in 1988 after a clash with his Minister over financial mismanagement.
  • Alice Spring - ATSIC

    Charles Perkins came back to live out the rest of his life in Alice Springs. He was elected to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) in 1993 and served as Deputy Chairman in 1994–95. He also served as a mentor to several of Australia’s Aboriginal athletes.
  • Passing of Charles Perkins

    Charles Perkins sadly passes away in Sydney due to a renal failure. During the 1970s Perkins actually had a kidney transplant, at the time of his death he was actually the longest post-transplant survivor in Australia. RIP.
