    Fifty countries joined each other in forming the United Nations. In June of 1945 the organization was made. This united the many countries and its purpose was to keep peace between them.

    Sukarno led the effort to establish Indonesia as an independant nation. He proclaimed the country's independence, He also made himself president of the newly formed country.

    The United States had granted The Philippines their independence on July 4th. They were granted their Independence on the same day as the United States independence day. They were also the first colony to gain independence after World War II.

    Jawaharlal Nehru was their first prime minister. He ruled the country for seventeen years. After its independence it became the world's largest democracy.

    China's economy was collapsing. Many nationalist soldiers became Communists because of this. Mao Zedong was in complete control of China in October of 1949.

    Ghana had wanted their independence from Britain for awhile. Before it was the independent country of Ghana it was known as the Gold Coast. Kwame Nkrumah led the country to independence.

    The Soviet Union developed an intercontinental ballistic missile to push their satellite into outer space. They called it the Sputnik and it was the first unmanned satellite created. It was launched on October 4th.

    Cuba became a Communist country following the Cuban revolution. It was led by Fidel Castro and lasted six years before it came to an end. Once the revolutionaries had gotten rid of the Batistas, they replaced the government with Communist.

    Neil Armstrong and Buzz Alderin were the first two human beings to walk on the moon. They flew there on the rochetship known as Apollo 11. Michael Collins was the pilot for the mission.

    Bangladesh became independent from Pakistan. This happened after they won the Bangladesh Liberation War. The war was between the two states East Pakistan and West Pakistan.

    The North Vietnamese Army captured the capitol of South Vietnam, Saigon in April 1975. This marked the end of the Vietnam war. North and South Vietnam reunified about a year later.

    Corazon Aquino was the eleventh president of the Philippines. She was also the very first woman president there. She restored democracy in the Country after the dictator rule of Ferdinand Marcos.

    In Nicaragua 1990 Sandinistas were voted out of power. Violeta Barrios de Chamarro beat them in election votes. After coming into power she rid the Country of Communism.

    Mobutu dictatorship in Zaire fails
    Mobutu died in ehile of prostate cancer in 1997. Laurent Kabila had led a group of rebels against him and expelled him from the country. He was a very corrupt leader and was anti-communist.
  • South Korea and North Korea meet to improve relations

    South Korea and North Korea meet to improve relations
    North Korea and South Korea met at a meeting to improve relations between the parts of the country. The South Korean Government had paid North Korea a huge amount of money in order to attend the meeting. The North-South joint declaratioon was signed by both rulers.
