  • (Chapter 1)

    -Attend Funeral of great owner, Mary Finch
    - Mr. Roberts ignores Ms. Finch's will

    -Mr. Roberts sells Ruth and Isabel to Anne & Elihu Lockton
    -Locktons are pro-British pretending to be Patriots

    -Curzon takes her to to the water well
    - gives her good bread
    -Curzon tells Isabel about the war
    - He wants Isabel to be a spy for him and his Master
    -Isabel rejects it, because protecting Ruth and (SCROLL DOWN) herself is more important
  • (Chapter 7)

    -meets Becky, an indentured servant and Isabel's "Mentor"
    - Lots of chored to do at the Lockton household
    - Becky tells Isabel that they are Royalsts too, since they owners are Royalists
  • (Chapter 5)

    -Arriving in New York city
    -Lockton's "argument with Bellington about not inspecting Madam's luggage
    - Ruth giggles and Isabel takes the blame for it, and gets slapped really hard (SCROLL DOWN)
    -Goes with Curzon to fetch water
  • (Chapter 8)

    -Isabel is still working very hard, but Madam still has complaints, and she looks like she is on the verge of slapping her again
    -Madam & Master ge into a big fight
    - Madam storms into her room
    -Ruth becomes Madam's personal servant (SCROLL DOWN)
    -Isabel and Ruth don't see each as often

    • Lady Semour comes over $ asks to see Isabel
      • Sees Ruth, who looks like she has been crying
      • Madam renames her Sal Lockton
      • Ruth gets in trouble for saying "Isabel"
    • When serving Master in the library, she (SCROLL DOWN) overhears them talking about Madam's chest
      • under her clothes is lots of money
      • Master proposes plan to pay & give 200 acres of land to any citizen willing to switch to the Royalists
  • (Chapter 10)

    • Isabel decides that she should tell Curzon about the $$ after tucking in Ruth
    • Ran sucessfully to Curzon's house
    • Told him about the $$
    • Runs home (SCROLL DOWN)
    • Isabel finds out that Ruth was hit by Madam
  • (Chapter 11)

    • Bellingham and his soldiers march into the Lockton's house and search for the $$ in Madam's chest: DIDN'T FIND IT
    • There is no $$ left in the chest: Isabel assumes that Master must have hidden the $$
    • Since soldiers & Bellingham can tell that he has hidden it, they arrest him
      • Madam faints in shock
  • (Chapter 12)

    • Isabel is sent by Madam to Lady Seymour's (Master's Aunt) house to tell her the news about Master
    • Madam HATES Lady Seymour
    • Lady Seymour treats Isabel nicely: lets her eat and drink good food before letting Isabel set out again to (SCROLL DOWN) deliver letters to the lawyer & Madam Lockton
  • (Chapter 13)

    • Master Lockton returns
      • Madam & Master get into a big fight about Madam wanting to leave for Charleston
      • Madam gets hit really badly
    • Sees Curzon @ the water pump and they talk (SCROLL DOWN) about freedom & politics
    • Sneaks into the library and reads a book
  • (Chapter 15)

    • Ruth has a seizure (epilepsy) in Madam's kitchen
      • Madam screams and says that Ruth has the "Devil in her"
    • Madam threatens to sell Ruth if she becomes a disruption
      • Lockton refuses: mainly because they might know about their plan to kill Washinton
  • (Chapter 14)

    • Madam calls Isabel in to serve Master and his clients
    • Master and his clients devise a plan to kill Washington
      • they sign a document with their plans and their names
      • Isabel hears a scream and & runs
  • (Chapter 16)

    • Isabel goes to the harbor to tell the news of Lockton's plan
    • After some time, Isabel finally gets to speak with Colonel Regan
      • He tells her to put the note back
    • Tells Isabel to come back with any more information she gets
      • Password is Ad astra
  • (Chapter 17)

    • Mater's plan was discovered
      • After a long fight, Master beats up Madam
      • He flees the city
    • Madam is freaking out and sore
  • (Chapter 18)

    • Becky encourages Ruth and Isabel to go to the hanging of Thomas Hickey
    • they see Curzon there but no Colonel Regan like Isabel had hoped
      • Hickey is terrified but still gets excecuted
  • Chapter 19

    • Forced to go to a long, boring church service with Madam
    • Young boy runs in and claims that the British have sailed into the harbor
    • There are many gunshots and firing of cannons
    • Ruth has a "mini seizure" because she is (SCROLL DOWN) scared of the looud noises
  • Chapter 20

    • Becky is sick so Isabel does some of her work
    • U.S. decalres independance from Britain
      • celebration by pulling down the King George III and chopping him into bits
    • Madam acts VERY strangly: giving Isabel & (SCROLL DOWN) Ruth gingerbread & milk along with telling the girls to take the day off
    - Isabel feels very sleepy and falls asleep
  • Chapter 21

    QUOTE: "For that, I shall never forgive myself"
    - Ruth is sold while Isabel is drugged and asleep
    - Becky knew what happened
    - Ruth sent to Nevis in the West Indies
    - Isabel threatens and conronts Madam
    - Madam hits Isabel with a painting
    - Isabel runs away to Colonel Regan
    - Col. Regan turns Isabel back over to Madam
    - Isabel tries to escape out of the window (caught & beaten)
  • Chapter 22

    - Isabel will never be givin freedom
    - Isabel is in jail & was beaten
    - tried in court -> won't be killed but will be breanded with letter "I" (for insolence)
  • Chapter 23

    • Isabel gets branded (cries, but doesn't scream)
      • very dilusional
      • seems as though she has a concusion/ fever
      • "Whatever you do, don't scream" (p. 146)
      • "They cooked me" (p. 148)
  • Chapter 24

    • finds out that she is @ Lady Seymour's house and she is being cared for there
      • been laying there unconcious for 6 days
      • learns her story about why she was branded again
    • Isabel has to go back to Madam
  • Chapter 25

    • Madam doesn't acknowledge Isabel; chores go through Becky
    • Curzon tries to talk to Isabel, but Isabel is mad at him because she thinks he wasted her time thinking of freedom
    • Isabel tells him never to come back
  • Chapter 26

    • People at the water pump were talking about freedom if you fight for the British
      • Grandfather kissed Isabel's branded "I"
      • "A scar is a sign of strength. The sign of a survivor." (p. 167)
    • Curzon carries ISabel' water buckets back to the Lockton's
  • Chapter 27

    • Battle of Brooklyn: British beat Patriots
    • Isabel idebating which side will be most helpful to help get Ruth back
  • Chapter 28

    • British soldiers invade NY
    • Madam tells Isabel to go out and buy some groceries
    • Isabel decides now is her chance to go to the British army
  • Chapter 29

    • Isabel comes out of her hiding
    • tries to convince Captain Campbell take her in to the British army
    • Isable uncovers stuff that she wasn't supposed to?
    • Captain Cambell moves on and Master Lockton tells Isabel to continue getting things from the market
  • Chapter 30

    • Lady Seymoour asks Isabel to be her servant because she has many people staying with her
    • Isabel works hard serving the Hessians
    • Wakes up in a fire in Lady Seymour's house
  • Chapter 31

    • HUGE fire in Lady Seymour's house and all around the town
    • Isabel and Lady Seymour manage to get L.S.'s prized possesions and scramble out the door
    • both can't breathe and L.S. is hurt
    • hobble over to the Lockton's house (not on fire)
  • Chapter 32

    • Nathaniel Hale excecuted for being a U.S. spy
    • Lady Seymour is inspected by a doctor
    • many homeless staying with the Lockton's
    • Isabel left Ruth's doll in Lady Seymour's burning house
  • Chapter 33

    • Lady Seymour is healing and becoming stronger
    • British and U.S. had a battle in the commons(?)
      • bunch of Patriots captured and held as prisoners
      • including Curzon p.201-> Isabel is fighting herself on whether or not to join the Patriots
  • Chapter 34

    • party for capture of Ft. Washington held at the Lockton's house
    • creates a plan to visit Curzon but denies it p. 211 "The rebels planted the seeds of war, let them enjoy their harvest" p. 214 " A dim plan had hatched a itself in my brainpan without consent. And I did not much like it." p. 213 "Would they let him starve? The stars said not a word"
  • Chapter 35

    • goes to visit Curzon in jail
    • brings him and his jailmates food and newspaper to sleep on
    • learns that Curzon was shot in the battle
  • Chapter 36

    • Lady Seymour gets a bad fever & Isabel has to serve her
    • Curzon is so sick
    • goes on errands for Lady Seymour
    • book shopkeeper gives Isabel "Common Sense" and tells her to keep it a secret p. 227 "The more I leave behind, the more food there is for you to take the prison" p.224-225 Madam trying to get to S. Carolina to kill Lady Seymour
  • Chapter 37

    • Lady Seymour restored in health
    • Isabel volunteers to go to the Tea Water Pump every day in order to visit Curzon more
    • Curzon is litterly about to DIE
    • makes a deal with new sergeant that Isabel will tell Captain Morse they're sick so they can send in a doctor

  • Chapter 38

    • it's Christmas!
    • Lady Seymour gives Isabel new shoes
    • Lady Seymour tells Madam that Isabel has been visiting the prison
      • Madam forbids Isabel to go the the prison
    • Isabel gives bread pudding to a family of 4
      • family is very greatful and Isabel feels "at peace"
  • Chapter 39

    • Sarah and Isabel go to the fish market
    • sees Captain Morse but tries to ignore him because she is in public
      • agrees to meet him later
    • sneaks out of the house to go to Morse's tavern
      • he gives Isabel a loaf of bread with a note inside
      • note reads that Washington defeated some Hessian soldiers in a battle
      • hears people celebrating b/c U.S. now has hope
  • Chapter 40

    • Sarah has baby boy
    • Lady Seymour still isn't well
    • reads Common Sense by the firelight
  • Chapter 41

    • Madam is getting ready for the Queen's ball
    • Lady Seymour has a seizure
    • Isabel thinks of Ruth
  • Chapter 42

    • Lady Seymour slowly dying
    • Captain Morse asks Isabel to deliver some $ to Captain Farrar
    • Captain Farrar asks Isabel to deliver a note to Captain Morse
    • Madam whips Isabel
  • Chapter 43

    • Jane Drinkwater tells Madam that Isabel was delivering messages from the rebels and Madam beats Isabel
    • Isabel puts the note in the fire; Mdadm is furious
    • Madam reviels that Ruth was not sold yet, she is is Charlston
    • Isabel writes a fake note saying that she is now free - devises a plan to go find Ruth
  • Chapter 44

    • sneaks out of the house with Lady Seymour's advice
    • goes to clean the jail cells
    • Isabel sneaks Curzon out and lies that she is dumping out dead bodies
    • Isabel and Curzon are on their way to freedom!
  • Chapter 45

    • Isabel & Curzon sneak past a bunch of prisoners to get to the boats
    • Isabel rows Curzon & her away until her hands are bleeding and she falls asleep
    • Isabel wakes up and she thinks they are in New Jersey
