  • Manchuria

    The Manchu people formed their own empire called Jurchen. They invaded China and founded the Chinese Qing Dynasty.
    Although China signed a treaty with Russia, The Russians took advantage of the weak (Qing government) and annexed the part that touches the Pacific Ocean. Japan then attacked the Russians to take this important piece of land. Later, Japan invaded the Chinese part of Manchuria too. This eventually led to World War II.

  • Germany’s Rearmament

    Adolf Hitler announced that he would rearm Germany in violation of the Treaty of Versailles. Hitler revealed that Germany had begun to construct an air force, and unveiled plans to reinstitute conscription and create a German army of more than half a million men.

  • Spanish Civil War

    The Spanish Civil War was a war that Spanish General Francisco Franco and his troops successfully took control of Spain. A lot of different groups worked together with the Spanish Republic to stop him, including socialists, communists, anarchists, and other leftist group. The fascist governments of Germany and Italy provided troops and supplies for Franco, while the communist Soviet Union sold the Republican forces weapons.

  • Anschluss or Union

    Adolf Hitler announces an “Anschluss” between Germany and Austria. Hitler felt strong enough to plan a union or Anschluss with Austria. This was part of his aim to unite all German-speaking people in one country. It was forbidden by the Treaty of Versailles so Hitler had to plan very carefully. Hitler began by ordering the Austrian Nazi Party to make as much trouble as it could.

  • Czechoslovakia

    Hitler’s forces invade and occupy Czechoslovakia. Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, French Premier Edouard Daladier, and British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain signed the Munich Pact, handing it over to Germany in the name of peace.
