After having many debates Henry Clay : The Great Compromiser settles the debate. Maine would be admitted to a free state and Arkansas would be open to slavery The Missouri compromise helped maintain the balance between slave state and free states and created the line of 36'30.

    The Nullification Crisis
    The passing of tarrif laws, Southern staes felt that the tariffs were unfair and didn't support the south just the north. Vice president John C. Calhoun any state could void a federal law that they felt was unconstitutional. South Carolina threatened to Secede after the federal government denied their government. The Great Compromiser came up with yet another compromise and lowered the tariff.

    Congress had many heated debates after the war with Mexico. The debates were about what territories would be a part of the slave or free states. Once again Henry Clay would help make a compromise. California would be admitted as a free state. And as a result of California being free congress would not pass laws banning slavery from the rest of the territories.

    Congress passes the Fugitive Slave Act in 1850. This act prevented African Americans who had fled from the south and reached free states to ever be considered free. This law ordered the northerners to send back any African Americans who were considered property. This angered the abolitionist who did not believe in slavery at all. This led to high tension between the north and the south and set up the stage for John Browns raid.

Illegally people came from neighboring state Missouri, to throw the vote and make Kansas become a slave state. As a result Anti-slavery opponents started their own government and was attacked by proslavery groups.Then the extreme abolitionist John Brown murdered many proslavery neighbors. He got the north pumped up.

    Dred Scott was slave who sued for his freedom. When he went to court he said he was in a free territory so he should be emancipated. The court declared that Scott was not freed ad African Americans were not considered citizens. Dred Scott was declared property and could not betaken from a person without due process of law.

    John Brown was a man who go wanted to inspires others to fight for their freedom. John Brown plans to capture the arsenal with armed slaves. Brown expected many slaves to come and join his fight but none showed. The cause of no one coming resulted in Brown and his men being captured and even killed. John Brown was also killed and after he died Abolitionist treated him as a hero. The problem of Slavery rasied tensions in America..
