  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    Missouri became a slave state and Maine became a free state. 36.30 was the new line to decide future states.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
    The act required that slaves be returned to their owners, even if they were in a free state. Judges gained more money if they sent a slave to the south rather than freeing them.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    The acts called for California to be a, "free state," it dealt with lands that were part of the Mexican Cession. This made people question if the slavery policies to be changed.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    The settlers of each territory could decide the issue of slavery by popular sovereignty. The act repealed the Missouri Compromise and made two new colonies.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin Published

    Uncle Tom's Cabin Published
    Tom was and enslaved African American noted for kindness piety. He refuses to reveal two runaways and was beaten to death. Southerners claimed the book wasn't a good representation of slave life. This caused Northerners to see slavery as a moral problem.
  • John Brown's Raid on Harpers Ferry

    Brown gained control of the arsenal with no slave uprising. Troops killed ten raiders and captured Brown, he was charged with murder and treason. There were few slaves on Harpers Ferry.
  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott Case
    The court ruled a case involving Dred Scott, and enslaved African American, who was not a citizen and considered as, "property." The Congress didn't have power to out law slavery.
  • Election of 1860

    Election of 1860
    Southerners wanted slavery in all new territories. Lincoln won the election causing the southern votes to be ineffective. A civil war was set when Northerners outnumbered and outvoted them.
  • South Carolina Secedes

    Seven states from the United States seceded and joined together to form the confederacy. They believed white southerners would loose the right to own a slave.
