    The Missouri compromise took place in 1819. Henery clay led in the compromise. The compromise was taking place because at the time there were 22 states divided evenly between slave and free. But they wanted Missouri to become a state but didn't know if it should be free or not. They then made Maine a state to balance powers, Missouri became a slave state and Maine became a free state. The Missouri Compromise was meant to create a balance between slave and non-slave states.

    The Wilmot proviso took place on August 8th, 1846. David Wilmot wrote the Wilmot proviso which was an unsuccessful proposal in the united states congress to ban slavery in a territory acquired from Mexico. It created popular sovereignty, which gave the people their own vote, the state or territory could also decide and make decisions. It prohibited the expansion of slavery into any territory acquired by the United States from Mexico as a result of the Mexican-American War settlement.

    The compromise of 1850 took place on January 29th,1850.
    Five laws passed in September of 1850 that dealt with the issue of slavery and territorial expansion. California wanted to enter the union as a free state upsetting the balance between the free and slave states in the U.S. Senate. The south then threatened to secede. In the end, slave trade in Washington, D.C., was abolished. California entered the Union as a free state and a territorial government was created in Utah.

    The fugitive slave act took place on, September 18, 1850. The act required that all escaped slaves, upon capture, be returned to their masters and that officials and citizens when escaping to the north. The north wanted to help the slaves because they wanted to end slavery throughout the country. The south threatened to secede if the slaves were not aloud to be returned or re captured. The fugitive slave act was put into place to keep the south from seceding.

    Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote a novel about slavery in the south. The novel sold more copies than anything previous. The country soon realized how terrible slavery had been. People started to join the absolutist cause. Many in the south claimed the novel was fictional and tried to discredit her work. As more and more people began to oppose slavery it helped begin this Great War against slavery.

    Kansas Nebraska Act
    It allowed people in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska to decide for themselves whether or not to allow slavery within their borders. The Act served to repeal the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which prohibited slavery north of Missouri compromise line. Kansas violated the Missouri compromise line which led to violence among the senate.

    dred Scott case
    Dred scott was moved to an anti slave state but was still held as a slave. Dred scott wanted to sue the government because it was against the constitution for a slave to be held and not free in a free state. This act imposed slavery through the union. After dred scott sued the union the story was heard around the world but in the end he was still held in the free state as a slave.

    Lincoln and douglas engaged in a series of debates which were followed throughout the country. The 2 candidates wanted to public express their morals on the slavery throughout the country. Lincolns view was that slavery was wrong and should not spread west, but douglas believed indivual states can decided if they want to continue with slavery or not. With douglas winning lincoln still became a national figure, 2 years later there were rivals for presidency.

    John Brown was an abolitionist who wanted to fight for slaves freedom. He attacked Harper Ferry, wanting to capture supplies and use them to arm a slave rebellion. John brown wanted to start a slave riot against the arsonal to fight against slave owners and for the slaves freedom. It started a worldwide movement, he started a rebel against slavery and fight against it. He started the fight to end slavery in the south, slavery was then ended 3 years after he was put to death

    Following the election of Lincoln the southern states seceded from the union as they saw Lincolns views against slavery a threat. The country was soon split into 2 separate countries. Later forming the confederate states of America which was having 2 seperate governments.
