  • FREE SOIL MOVEMENT,1848

    The free soil movement of 1848 opposed the expansion of slaverly in the new states in the West because they didn’t want there jobs to be taken away. The free soil party was formed because of the movement led by Abraham Lincoln. The movement brought the U.S. closer to the civil war because it brought up the discussion of slavery once again.
  • WILMOT PROVISO

    The Wilmot Proviso, 1848, was a bill proposed after the Mexican war that said slaverly or involuntary servitude would ever exist in any territory gained from Mexico. The bill was never passed but brought up the debate over slavery.

  • COMPROMISE OF 1850

    The compromise of 1850 was created in place of the Missouri compromise. The compromise gave the North California as a free state but the south gets the fugitive slave act which really put the U.S. towards the civil war because of all the tension it brought.
  • UNCLES TOM CABIN PUBLISHED, 1852

    Uncles Tom Cabin was published in 1852 by Harriet Beecher Stowe it showed in great detail slavery brutal and immoral. The book brought many people into perspective of how brutal slavery was and led others to revolt bringing the U.S. closer to the civil war.
  • KANSAS-NEBRASKA ACT, 1854

    The Kansa-Nebraska act of 1854 was a act let Kansa and Nebraska to have popular sovereignty. The act was brought up by Stephen A. Douglass he wanted to solve the problem of the extension of slavery. The act brought the U.S. closer to the civil war because of the tension it brought after bloody Kansas.
  • REPUBLICAN PARTY FORMED, 1854

    The Republican Party was formed after the Kanasa-Nebraska act the overall purpose of the act was to oppose the spread of slavery not to end it. They repealed the Kansas-Nebraska act and fugitive slave law, soon more people joined and became the seconded largest political party. This led the U.S. closer to the civil war because the Republican Party was beginning to threaten the south.
  • “BLEEDING KANSAS” ACT,1854

    The bleeding Kansas incident created sectionalism within the U.S. which brought us closer to the civil war. In 1856 pro slavery forces attacked Lawerance killing two people and destroying the town. Soon after John Brown retaliated him and his sons attacked a pro slavery farm killing 5 people. This led the Democratic Party to be more divided.
  • JOHN BROWNS RAID ON HARPERS FERRY,1854

    John Brown decided to raid Harpers Ferry. He was quickly put to an end by Robert E. Lee and hanged for his actions. Some Republican commended Browns use of violent action but many southerns felt like the North’s intention was to run the south. This led to the civil war because it further divided the North and south.
  • CANING OF CHARLES SUMMER,1856

    After Congress heard about what happened in Kansas senator Charles Summer then verbally attacked the Democratic administration. He included personal charges against South Carolina senator Andrew Butler. Butlers nephew Preston Brooks later beat Summer with a cane. This brought even more tension. Brooks action outraged the North but southern applauded him. Sectionalism countinted to grow leading the U.S. closer to the civil war.
  • DRED SCOTT V. SANFORD DECISION,1857

    In 1857 Dred Scott v. Sanford was held two days after Buchanan became president. The court, Roger Taney,stated that Scott had no right to sue because he wasn’t a citizen, Congress didn’t have the power to deprive a person of property without due process of law and the Missouri compromise was unconstitutional. Scott was later free. This led the U.S. to the to the civil war because of the arguments it brought up about slavery.
  • LINCOLN-DOUGLASS DEBATES,1857

    In 1858 Lincoln and Douglass debates become popular as Douglass was re-election for senator Lincoln was his opponent. During the race line became very well known with Republican and southerns vewied him as a radical. Douglass won the reelection but Lincoln became a Republican nomination for president. This led to the civil war because of the growing tension and leaders effected the people’s opinions.

    The election was coming and the Democratic Party was dividing, Douglass was the Republican leading candidate. The Republicans knew they had a easy win against the Democratic Party. Since Lincoln won the election. This led to the civil war because the south is now going to be upset that Lincoln ,a Republican,is in office.
