Wilmot Proviso
In 1846 in Pennsylvania David Wilmot had a proposal that outlawed slavery in any territory gained from the war with Mexico to prevent more slave states although James K. Polk was against the idea. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Wilmot -
Compromise of 1850
In 1850 Henry Clay decided that of the newly acquired land from Mexico it would be split into California a free state and in return the southern states would be allowed to hunt down runaway slaves no matter what. Fugitive Slave Act

Kansas-Nebraska Act

Bleeding Kansas
In 1855 settlers of Missouri came over to Kansas to help vote for anti-slavery soon enough the settlers made their own government and then the sack of Lawrence happened. Dred Scott vs. Standford
In 1857 Dred Scott lost a case to Standford when the Chief Justice Roger Taney ruled that slaves did not have the right to the law so even if a slave escaped to the north they would be brought back to their owners because they didn’t have rights. Lincoln-Douglas Debates
