Failure of the League
The League of nations was formed to keep the world at peace but had failed. The league tried to keep Italy, Germany, and Japan from disturbing the peace but it ended up in another World War. -
Treaty of Versailles
The Treaty of Versailles ended World War I, leaving Germany's government in ruins. The treaty had caused the German government to pay reparations leaving the people starving. The Germans were not happy with the rules of the treaty because they seemed very unfair. -
Great Depression
The Great Depression started in the United States due to the sudden stock fall. It became worldwide with the stock market crash in 1929. The worldwide Great Depression Period was through 1929 to 1932. -
Japanese Expansion
Japan was rapidly growing but since it is an island nation, it ran out of resources and land. So, Japan invaded Manchuria in 1931 than China in 1937. -
Japanese Depression
The Japanese people had lost faith in the government and turned to the army. The army invaded Manchuria and China had turned to the League. The government had been told to make the army stop but they didn't listen. -
Hitler's Actions
Though the League had tried to keep Germany from rising up to power again, once Hitler became chancellor he secretly built up his army. The League was aware that he was doing this, but there fear of communism spreading kept them from butting in. -
Italy's Invasion
Italy invaded Abyssinia, a country with little strength who called for the League's help. The only thing the League could think of was cutting off Italy's food supply but that did not change anything because Italy could easily get supplies from non-member states. -
Appeasement Failure
While Germany built up its army, the league thought it was fair after the unfair Treaty restrictions. The league thought that letting Germany do all that they couldn't would prevent them from starting another war. But, building up the army gave Hitler more and more power, which was what the League was trying to prevent. -
Rise of Dictatorship
Hitler started taking advantage of the country's problems. He started making people believe what he believes, that jews are inferior and should be killed. -
Policy of Appeasement
This most noteable appeasement, signed by the leaders of Germany, Britain, France and Italy gave Sudetenland back to Germany. The Czech Leader was not invited and betrayed by losing Sudetenland.
