Causes of the American Revolution

  • Royal Proclamation

The British Government had created a line along the Appalachian mountains preventing the colonists from moving west and aggravating the Native Americans. Even though this boundary was in place, the colonists still expanded into the west.
  • The Sugar Act

The British imposed a duty/tax on foreign sugar and other goods to make money. The response by the colonists was surprising to the British, they did not expect the colonists to dislike this act. This act started to create tension between the Colonist and the British.
  • The Stamp Act

The Government had placed a heavy tax on all printed matters and also required all printed matters to have a certified stamp to make sure that the publishers had paid the tax. This made tensions even worse as the colonist did not like the British screwing with their businesses and personal lives.
  • Declaratory act

The Declaratory act was issued so that the parliament present in America had the ability to create any laws or taxes they wanted. This was not really noticed by the colonists because the Stamp act was repealed around the same time so the colonist were pleased.
  • Townsend Act

The Townsend act was a little more generic because it placed taxes and duties on more common goods. It also gave the ability for certain officials to get a writ of assistance which is basically a search warrant to check for smugglers. The colonists had begun to protest this act so the Crown had sent more Redcoats.
  • The Boston Massacre

The Boston Massacre was a large protest outside a government building, as the protest got more violent a redcoat had shot and killed a member of the riot. Then the whole staff of redcoats had opened fire on an unarmed group of civilians, killing several. This news had spread through the colonies quickly and tensions hit an all time high.
  • The Tea Act

After the East India Company nearly went bankrupt, Britain passed an act which excused the company from paying certain duties and allowed them to sell directly. The colonists despised this act and stopped buying tea and more protests began to spark.
  • Quebec Act

This act had extended the boundaries of Quebec further south into Massachusetts, Connecticut and Virginia. It also guaranteed the freedom of French Roman Catholics. This caused new colonial unity to brew, the colonists were not yet american but they were no longer British.
  • Intolerable Acts

These coercive acts were made to punish Boston and Massachusetts. The acts closed the poet of Boston, which was Americas largest poet and also revoked the 1961 charter of Massachusetts. Hostility towards the king from the colonists had grown and colonists continued to protest.
