Causes of the American Revolution

  • Navigation Act

    Navigation Act
    This was a series of laws passed by the English Parliament. These were to ensure that all the colonist's goods were shipped over to Britain so they could get more financial benefits, and that the colonists could only trade with Britain. The first one was basically ignored by the people of the colonies.
  • French and Indian war

    French and  Indian war
    This is also know as the 7 year war. It was a war Between the British/colonists, French, and Indians. The colonists ended up winning. It lasted from 1756-1763.
  • Proclamation of 1763

    This proclamation prohibited colonist's from settling west of the Appalachian Mountains, and it was disliked by many of the colonists
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    There were taxes added to molasses and sugar, and because of this, colonists started smuggling them both and boycotting
  • The Stamp Act

    All legal documents and printed papers were taxed, stamp agents enforced this and made sure all papers has a stamp, and as a result there were protests and the act was repealed in march of 1766
  • Quartering Act

    Quartering Act
    Colonists had to host 1,500 British soldiers and supply them with things to live. Colonists refused, and the soldiers had to sleep on their ships, or the soldiers kicked the colonists out.

    It was a declaration by the British Parliament that came with the repeal of the Stamp Act. It said the British Parliament's taxing authority was the same in America as in Britain.

    This a tax on glass, lead, paper, paint, and tea, this also authorized writs of assistance. This eventually resulted in the Boston Massacre, and then widespread protests.

    The Boston Massacre was when a bunch of British soldiers were attacked by a drunk bunch of colonists started throwing really crude snowballs at them, and when a shot was fired, it got nasty, but only bout 4-5 people died, so the name is miss leading, but the press stretched the truth to make it out to be really bad.

    A network of communication for passing along news of British activity. Colonists rallied together against British policy and formed a political union throughout the colonies.

    This limited town meetings, closed Boston's ports, and the Boston Tea Party was responded to with force. More protests started, and they started forming their military.

    This when the colonist officially formed their army, and elected George Washington the leader of it.This then led to a petition to the King to stop stupid.

    This was the shot that started the American Revolution. It was an accidental shot, and this happened at the battle of Lexington. This was the start of the Revolutionary War.

    After the Army formed, the colonies sent King George a petition begging him to stop this to prevent a war. This was unsuccessful. and George III declared them rebels and went to war.

    This was a newspaper voicing independence from Great Britain to the people in the colonies. As a result, more people were ready to break away from Britain
  • The Battle of Bunker Hill

    The Battle of Bunker Hill
    The Patriots surrounded Boston, and 1,000 minute men marched to Bunker Hill. The men were told not to shoot "until you see the whites of their eye", which mean until they were close so they would get a good shot. they colonist lost only because they ran out of ammunition.
