    As a result of the Mexican war, The Wilmot Proviso was designed to remove the slavery within the land required. This is one of the major event leading up to the American Civil War.     A compromise to ease tensions between the North and South. The compromise said all new territories joined the states can choose wether or not to keep slavery by its popular sovereignty. And all the slave trade are banned in Washington D.C. Moreover, the slaves who escape to the free states could be returned back to their masters, and anyone who help slaves to escape will be punished. This compromise caused the conflicts between North and South more.

Therefore, in order to gain the headcount advantage in Kansas, both parties sent large numbers of immigrants to Kansas. And there are bloody conflicts happened.
