Canada's Journey to Independence

  • The Paris Peace Conference

    The Paris Peace Conference
This conference was the meeting of the Allies to determine the peace treaties for the defeated central powers. This was an important moment for Canada as well because of the big part they had played in the war this resulted in Canada being allowed to represent its self as its own independent nation and sign the peace treaty. One of the many marking keystones in the process of Canada's complete sovereignty in relation to Britain.
  • The Chanak Crisis

    The Chanak Crisis
This marks the first major foreign policy test for Canada in which Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King acted on behalf of Canada. After Turkish forces threatened British stationed troops, Britain issued for assistance from Canada to send over Canadian soldiers to which King hesitated and declared it would need to be discussed in parliament. This was an important keystone is defining Canada's independence as they were now making their own decisions.
  • The Halibut Treaty

    The Halibut Treaty
The Halibut Treaty marks the first treaty independently negotiated and signed between Canadian-American affairs in regards to fishing rights on the North-Pacific Ocean. Thus marking another important key stone towards Canada's independence is diplomatic affairs.
  • The Balfour Report

    The Balfour Report
Britain had finally declared Canada and all its other dominions of the common wealth as equal to each other with The Balfour Report. This was significant because it marked the complete acceptance from Britain in regards to Canada being a totally independent nation. arguably one of the most important milestones to date.
  • The King-Byng Crisis

    The King-Byng Crisis
In this crisis King-Byng, the Governor General refused to dissolve parliament and call for a fresh election on the advice of the prime minister, thus this created a conflict. Eventually this resulted in no G.G. ever refusing the advice of the Prime Minister again. This Crisis was a conflict between PM and GG, and why it is important is because the GG represents Britain and in order to be completely independent PM should have ultimate control and the GG should have none and thus was confirmed.
  • The Statue of Westminster

    The Statue of Westminster
The Statue of Westminster officially marked Canada's declaration of independence. This just being said speaks volumes of the importance of this final tie cut from Britain to ultimately free a now completely independent nation. And thus this marks the last and evidently the most important moment in the journey that had been Canada's Independence and freedom.
