    King Norodom Sihanouk, along with the people, declared independence from France on November 9, 1953. The King did a series of things which were all to try to get the French to leave and he called it his "Crusade for Independence."

    Sihanouk becomes Prime Minister of Cambodia while his father is the king.
  • Sihanouk

    In 1960, Sihanouk became the leader of Cambodia after his father died.
  • Relations with America end

    Sihanouk cuts off relations to the United States and lets North Vietnamese soldiers set up bases in Cambodia to fight against South Vietnam.
  • Civil War Begins

    Cambodia's civil war begins.
  • Khmer Rouge is founded

    Khmer Rouge is founded. Khmer Rouge is a group of people who follow the Communist party of Kampuchea.
  • Bombing campaign

    The USA starts a secret bombing campaign in Cambodia against the North Vietnamese soldiers there.
  • Sihanouk Overthrown

    Prime Minister Lon Nol overthrew Sihanouk and sent the army to fight the Northern Vietnamese.
  • Civil War Ends

    Cambodia's civil war ends.
  • Cambodia renamed

    Cambodia changes its name to Democratic Kampuchea and Sihanouk resigns. Khieu Samphan becomes head of state.

    Vietnamese troops enter Cambodia.
  • New Prime Minister

    Hun Sen becomes the new Prime Minister and thousands of people become refugees.

    The Vietnamese troops leave Cambodia, Buddhism is re-established as the state religion, and Socialism is no longer the form of government.

    Sihanouk becomes the king again and the country is re- named Cambodia.

    Hun Sen wings the election and becomes Prime Minister. Ranariddh becomes the President of National Assembly.

    US based Cambodian Freedom Fighters (CFF) are found guilty of an attack in Phnom Penh. The CFF pledges to continue fighting to overthrow Hun Sen.
  • Linking the country

    Cambodias first bridge is built over the Mekong River linking East and West Cambodia.
  • First Multi-Party elections

    Cambodia has their first multi-party elections. The Cambodian People's Party won in 1,597 out of 1,620 communes.
  • Hun Sen re-elected

    Prime Minister Hun Sen is re-elected because the CPP (Cambodian People's Party) made a deal with the Funcinpec party.
  • Funcinpec Party

    The Funcinpec Party dropped Prince Norodom Ranariddh as their leader.
  • Cambodia and Thailand disagreements

    Two Cambodian soldiers were shot and killed by Thailand troops in a disputed area. Small fights like these add up to something bigger in the future.
  • Caught Spying

    Two Thailand citizens were caught spying on Cambodia after they were arrested for crossing the disputed border. Hun Sen calls for UN peacekeepers.
  • Withdraw of troops

    Cambodia and Thailand both withdrew their troops from the disputed border.
  • King Norodom Sihanouk dies

    Norodom Sihanouk dies at age 89.

    Hun Sen has been in power for 34 years.
