At the Home of the Angels, where everything was destroyed the walls were cracked, and the windows were barred, Jennings is repeatedly hit because he doesn't know what to do or what the rules are. Then he meets Mark, a nice kid who is a lifer, who teaches him everything he needs to know.

The Carpenter's
At the Carpenter's home they have a sparkly clean kitchen. Jennings is not here for long because Mrs. Carpenter was beating him for everything he did that was slightly wrong. Mr. Carpenter didn't approve of his wife's behavior so he brought Jennings back to the orphanage.

When Jennings got back he was yelled at by Sister Francis. After he told her what happened to him, she suddenly started to treat him better and give him higher quality food. Later he was talking to Mark and Sister Margret brought him into the main room. She told him he was leaving to go home with his mom.

When Jennings sees his mom he is very happy but has lots of questions. When he got home he noticed that his home was small and beat up. Then Mrs. Burch gets sick again and he goes to yet another home.

St. Teresa's
At St. Teresa's, Jennings notices it look a lot like the Home of the Angels, very beaten down and destroyed. He meets Sister Ann Catherine who is very nice and has rosy cheeks. He also met Sister Barbara who hits and yells at Jennings constantly. The dining room is split down the middle with boys and girls. Doggie was not allowed to be with Jennings so he was put in a closet until he left St. Teresa's.

Jennings gets sent home with his mother. He comes home to a beaten down house and his unknown brother Jerome. Larry begins playing hooky and starts skipping school. George decides to drop out and get a job for the family for a better house. The family finds a house. However, while packing, Jerome has trouble breathing and goes to the hospital.

New House
They are now in a much nicer home then the previous one they had. They now live in Queens but they have trouble paying the bills. At his new school the teacher calls him stupid. He meets Sal, the bus driver. Jennings can talk to Sal about anything. Jennings notices a three-day-old kitten and try to nurse it to health however it dies. then Mrs. Burch gets sick again.

The Frazier's Home
Their house is a very large, beautiful, and elegant house with a guarded gate on the front of the street. Jennings even has his own room and bathroom. Donald is a rude teen who has a bad attitude. Jennings was made fun of and got into a fight resulting in stitches on his hand. Sal saves him from the fight and takes him to a hospital. George takes Jennings, his clothes, and Doggie home. Martha was like a second mother to Jennings.

New Apartment
The new apartment is a very small apartment where everyone had to share rooms. Larry, Gene, and Jennings have to share a room with a TV but aren't allowed to watch it. Sal got transferred to the Bronx. Jennings got very upset because he couldn't talk to him. Larry got upset and ran away because he had to work a lot. Jennings is blamed for Larry running away so he did too. He ran away to the Bronx Zoo.

At the zoo, which is full of animals and plants, he laid down in bushes and asked for food or went in dumpsters. Sal finds him there and takes him back home.

It is the same apartment as before, very small, and where everyone shares rooms. Sal visits as much as he can, though George is strongly opposed to this idea. George would not go on road trips with Sal. Jennings learned from Jerome that his father was, and probably still is, a drunk. He wishes Sal could be his dad. Sal had to go for a few weeks because of his job. Therefore he couldn't take care of Jennings after Mrs. Burch fell off the roof.

The Brooklyn Shelter
Here it was very unwelcoming, very beat up, and had bad food. Jennings ate bread and butter instead of the gross food. He met Mark there after Mark got sick at HOTA. Jennings wanted to be pretend brothers with Mark. The lady who brought in Jennings told him that the Fraziers or Sal did not want him. Mark passes out and is brought to the hospital. Jennings wanted to see him so he tried to escape, only to learn, after getting caught, that Mark had passed away.

This is another very small apartment they stayed in. Mrs. Burch is in traction so she can not move. Larry started drinking just like George. Jennings meets Stacy in the park and hangs out with her a lot. Then Stacy leaves him to go with her family on vacation. Mrs. Burch overdosed on pain medication and they went to another home.

Orphanage in Yonkers
The Orphanage in Yonkers was in horrible condition and needed new tile, working toilets, and new sinks. Here, he gets punched by Ronny, the "tough kid". He then fights back so Ronny respects him for sticking up for himself. He teaches Kevin how to survive. He wets himself and is made fun of. He gets scared so he runs away to the zoo again.

Bronx Zoo
Here he goes to a graveyard after looking for Whitestone bridge. He Wanted to find Martha because she was a very nice lady. At the graveyard Officer Pops acts like a ghost and scares Jennings into Officer Daily. Jennings is told he is going to Martin hall because he's a juvenile delinquent. Mr. Daily takes him to his home instead of bringing Jennings to jail.

The Daily's own a nice comfortable home. Jennings tells the Daily's about how horrible it was at the homes he has lived in during the past few years. He overheard Mr. and Mrs. Daily talking about how Mr. Daily could lose his job if they kept Jennings. He then decided to run away because he didn't want Mr. Daily to lose his job.

Bronx Zoo
Jennings asked someone which direction the zoo was and they called the cops on him. He finds his way to the zoo after running from the person who called the cops. When he gets here he hides in the bushes and finds Sal.
