    The Roaring Twenties

    Following a recession in '19 - '20 after WWI the US experienced a brief economic boom in the early 20's. Automobiles were becoming common and the film and radio industries boomed. Electricity, phone lines, and indoor plumbing reached many homes for the first time. Women had gained the right to vote and alcohol was prohibited. The Harlem Renaissance and Jazz age occurred. Notable people of the era: Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Stein, Disney, Lindbergh. The stock market crash of '29 ended the age.

    The Great Depression

    Beginning in America about a month before the Wall Street Crash of 1929 a global depression occurred. Unemployment rose in the US to 25% and in some countries up to 33%. International trade declined by half and personal income, prices, and profits dropped. Spurred political change in many countries, most famously in Germany.

    Nazi Book Burning
    Arguably the most famous book burning to occur. Writing that was considered "un-German" was burned. Over 25,000 books were burned.

    The second global war. The most widespread and deadliest war. Involved more than thirty countries and resulted in more than 50 million deaths.

    McCarthyism

    McCarthyism gains its name from Joseph McCarthy, a U.S. senator during the '50's, though it began before his involvement. This period of fear mongering was known as the Second Red Scare and lasted from about 1947 to 1956 beginning with Truman's executive order requiring a loyalty screening for any federal civil service employee.

    The Cold War

    The Cold War began a time of political tension between the Soviet Union and its allies and the United States and its NATO allies. It is called the Cold War because it did not involve direct large-scale fighting between the two sides.
