    Civil rights leaders suggested activists to avoid freedom songs and militant rhetoric that would incite a mob. just as SNCC Chairman John Lewis needed to modify his speech, Zellner recalls being asked to tone it down.
    But that failed to forestall the 24-year-old activist from joining in music that Wednesday afternoon.
    "all of us collected at the foot of the stairs of the liberty circle, and we sang freedom songs anyway," says Zellner, now seventy four.
