Black Stereotypes

  • Slavery

  • Blackface

Blackface was a style of theatrical make up that dehumanized African Americans. Someone painted their face with black make up and "acted" like someone who was black.
  • KuKluxKlan

This group of people advocated extremist reactionary currents such as white supremacy and violence towards blacks.
  • Jim Crow

Blacks and Whites were segregated. Black people were being looked at as dirty, wild, and inferior.
  • Sambo

Sambo means "african american" and refers to lazy, carefree, servile, prone to lying, prone to stealing, and happy men. This word was being used to describe these black men and was stereotyping them all.
  • Birth of a Nation

This was a movie that brought up a lot of controversial issues due to how they portrayed blacks. They made blacks seem as stupid and sexually aggressive towards white woman and they made the KKK seem like heroes. This film triggered many protests and people claim that it inspired the formation of the second era of KKK members.
  • Stereotypes

These stereotypes have been carried since the 17th century, but now they are more persistent. People associate blacks with violence and bad things such as drugs and crack.
  • Acceptance

More people have learned to let go of the stereotypes and nit dehumanize blacks. Many people don't even think about someone's skin color anymore and don't act to quick to judge.
