Black Panther Party

  • Anti-Draft Protest, Pre Existance

Bobby Seal protested African-Americans being drafted into service because they weren't given the proper rights. He stood up on a chair in downtown Oakland and gave his Uncle Sammy Call Me Lucifer speech. He was confronted by a police officer and hit the police officer. He was arrested for assault. This was the first time he lead a protest for civil rights.

  • FBI Gets Involved

    FBI Gets Involved
The FBI targeted the Black Panther Party by COINTELPRO (Counter Intelligence Program). They tried to bring the party down through sabotage, misinformation, and much more. They killed a member (Fred Hampton) in his sleep. They also had a shootout at a Chicago office. This lasted for a few years.
  • Period: to

    Expansion

Black Panthers opened offices in 68 different cities all across the U.S. The farthest east was Winston-Salem and it stretched all the way to Seattle.
  • Period: to

    Party Going Down

It became a community group in the late 70's. Then the party started to go downhill until it finally closed its last office in 1982. The reason it died out is kind of weird because no one knows how it went downhill so fast. The years the FBI were against it were the years they did the best. One reason why is because the leaders were either in jail, on the run, or dead.
  • Free Breakfast Program

    Free Breakfast Program
Beginning in 1969 the Panthers created the Free Breakfast for Children Program across America. They estimated that they fed 10,000 kids every day.
