    Basketball was first brought to China in the 1930's. Wang Zhizhi was the first professional Chinese basketballer, when the first basketball association in China started in 1995. Wang was one of the youngest players to play in the league.

    Yao ming is a now retired Chinese former NBA basketballer who was number one draft for Houston Rockets in 2002 (first Chinese player to do this). He was born on the 12th of September 1980. He was selected in the NBA all star team game eight times. Yao is 2.29m (7 ft 6). Yao's position was centre and was often compared to other players such as Shaquille O'Neal who was a rival of Yao. Since Yao was drafted it has affected Chinese basketball as players in China are being watched by the NBA more.

    Since basketball has been introduced to China, the game has expanded. Basketball is the most popular sport in China followed by football (soccer) which is the world game. This is outstanding for basketball to overtake the popularity of football (soccer), as China is a big country with 1.3 billion people. In the Olympic games China have a basketball team who are powerhouses of Asia. Throughout China there are many amatuar clubs for kids or people who want to try the sport.

    Basketball has become a major part of Asia, after the game was introduced to Asia in the 1930's. There is is a proffetional chinese league the CBA (Chinese basketball league), which was established in 1995. There are also junior amatuar leagues across China as so many kids play. The NBA have grown fond of Chinese players since Yao Ming played for the Rockets.
