Augusto Pinochet was born in November 25, 1915. He was born in Valparaiso, Chile. His parents were, Augusto Pinochet Vera, who was the father, and Avelina Ugarte Martinez, who was his mother. -
Chilean Army
Augusto Pinochet joined the chilean army in 1935. He was a career military officer who was appointed army commander. He was appointed by President Allende 18 days before the coup. -
Chilean Commander
Augusto Pinochet became Chilean commander in 1973. He was a dictator army officer who led the military coup in Chile. He established himself at the head of the ensuing military regime. President Salvador Allende made him commander. -
Chief
In 1980-1990, Pinochet enacted a constitution which gave him a 8-year presidential term. A plebiscite held in 1988 rejected his candidacy as president beyond 1990. But, he retained his post as commander-in-chief of the chilean army until 1998. -
Arrested
In 1998, Augusto Pinochet became the centre of international attention because he was arrested in London. Spain wanted him to stand trial for crimes of genocide and terrorism. This caused tension between the UK and Chile. -
United Kingdom
In 2000, Augusto Pinochet was still in house arrest because of what he did. The UK government returned him to Chile on the grounds of ill health. After that, he was able to stand trial for what he did. -
Chilean Supreme Court
In 2002, Augusto Pinochet was mentally incapable of defending himself in trial. The Supreme Court of Chile ruled that proceedings against him will be suspended for good. Later, he resigned his post as senator for life. -

In 2004, the National Commision on Political Imprisonment and Torture issued its report. The report confirmed more than 35,000 cases of torture. And they all took place during the Pinochet Regime. -
Argentina
In 2005, The Chilean Supreme Court voted to remove Augusto Pinochet’s freedom for illegal financial dealing with a case. The case was involving at least 119 political dissidents disappearing or being executed. Their bodies were found in 1975 in neighbouring Argentina. -
Pinochets Grave
Augusto Pinochet died December 10, 2006. He never stood trial for the crimes that he was accused of, genocide and terrorism. Augusto Pinochet died from a heart attack.
