Apollo 1-17

  • Apollo 1

    Apollo 1
Tragedy struck on the launch pad at Cape Kennedy during a preflight test for Apollo 204. The mission was to be the first crewed flight of Apollo, and was scheduled to launch Feb. 21, 1967. Astronauts lost their lives when a fire swept through the command module. This was a manned mission.
  • Apollo 7

    Apollo 7
Apollo 7 was a human spaceflight mission carried out by the United States. It was the first mission in the United States' Apollo program to carry a crew into space. Due to Apollo 1's tragedy, improvements were made to Apollo 7's mission and safety procedures. Apollo 7 was successfully launched, and was a manned mission.
  • Apollo 8

    Apollo 8
Apollo 8, the second manned spaceflight mission in the United States Apollo space program, became the first manned spacecraft to leave Earth orbit, reach the Earth's Moon, orbit it and return safely to Earth. Apollo 8 took three days to travel to the Moon. The mission objectives included a coordinated performance of the crew, the command and service module, or CSM, and the support facilities.
  • Apollo 9

    Apollo 9
Apollo 9 launched from Cape Kennedy, with Commander, Command Module Pilot and Lunar Module Pilot aboard. The primary objective of Apollo 9 was an Earth-orbital engineering test of the first crewed lunar module. It was the third manned mission in the United States. The mission proved the LM worthy of manned spaceflight. Further tests on the Apollo 10 mission would prepare the LM for its ultimate goal, landing on the Moon.
  • Apollo 10

    Apollo 10
The Apollo 10 mission encompassed all aspects of an actual crewed lunar landing, except the landing. It was the first flight of a complete, crewed Apollo spacecraft to operate around the moon. Its success enabled the first landing to be attempted on the Apollo 11 mission two months later. It was another manned mission, and had a successful flight.
  • Apollo 11

    Apollo 11
Apollo 11 was the spaceflight that successfully landed the first two humans on the moon. The primary objective of Apollo 11 was to complete a national goal set by President John F. Kennedy; to perform a crewed lunar landing and return to Earth. As there were humans present, it was another manned mission.
  • Apollo 12

    Apollo 12
Apollo 12 was the sixth manned flight in the United States Apollo program and the second to land on the Moon. It launched into a cloudy, rain-swept sky. Launch controllers lost telemetry contact at 36 seconds, and again at 52 seconds, when the Saturn V launch vehicle was struck by lightning. However, the electrical circuits were checked out and no significant problems were noted. The mission ended on November 24 with a successful splashdown.
  • Apollo 13

    Apollo 13
Apollo 13 was supposed to land in the Fra Mauro area. An explosion on board forced Apollo 13 to circle the moon without landing. At 5 1/2 minutes after liftoff, a little vibration was felt. Then the center engine of the S-II stage shut down two minutes early. This caused the remaining four engines to burn 34 seconds longer than planned, and the S-IVB third stage had to burn nine seconds longer to put Apollo 13 in orbit. It was classified as a "successful failure."
  • Apollo 14

    Apollo 14
Apollo 14 was the eighth manned mission in the United States Apollo program, and the third to land on the Moon. It was the last of the "H missions," targeted landings with two-day stays on the Moon. In the aftermath of Apollo 13, several modifications had been made to the Service Module electrical power system to prevent a repeat of that accident, including a redesign of the oxygen tanks and the addition of a third tank. Apollo 14 was a successful mission.
  • Apollo 15

    Apollo 15
Apollo 15 was the ninth manned mission in the United States' Apollo program, the fourth to land on the Moon, and the eighth successful manned mission. It was the first of what were termed "J missions", long stays on the Moon, with a greater focus on science than had been possible on previous missions. At the time, NASA called it the most successful manned flight ever achieved. The mission successfully accomplished its objectives.
  • Apollo 16

    Apollo 16
Apollo 16 was the tenth manned mission in the United States Apollo space program, the fifth and penultimate to land on the Moon and the first to land in the lunar highlands. The mission lasted 11 days. Two significant command and service module problems – one en route to the moon and one in lunar orbit – contributed to a delay in landing and a subsequent early termination of the mission by one day.
  • Apollo 17

    Apollo 17
Apollo 17 was the final mission of NASA's Apollo program. It was also the final manned launch of a Saturn V rocket. It was a "J-type mission" which included 3 days on the lunar surface and extended scientific capability. It was also the first mission to have no one on board who had been a test pilot. The mission broke several records: the longest moon landing, longest total extravehicular activities, largest lunar sample, and longest time in lunar orbit.
