    Antonio López de Santa Anna or Antonio López de Santa Anna Pérez de Lebrón was born February 21, 1794. This was in Jalapa Mexico. His parents were Manuela Pérez de Lebrón and Antonio López de Santa Anna.

    He joined the army early in life. By age 26 he was a Colonel, him rising through the ranks fast. He fought for the Spanish side in the Mexican War of Independence. However, he later switched sides.

    After he was one of the most important people in stopping Spain's invasion, he became president of Mexico. However he gave most of the power to Valentiń Gómez Farías, and let him make some reforms. However when the people did not accept these reforms he removed Valentiń Gómez Farías from power.

    In 1836, Texas declared independance. After doing so, Santa Anna invading. After the Battle of the Alamo, he divided forces letting Sam Houston to find him at the Battle of San Jacinto. Santa Anna was captured then, and forced to do things for Texas.

    He soon returned to Mexico everyone disappointed at him, after returning joining the Pastry War in 1838. He joined in the battle to prove himself again. In battle he was defeated, though Mexico thought he was a hero. During the War he lost his leg, and actually held a funeral for it. The French soon created a settlement with the Mexican government.

    Santa Anna was in and out of power frequently in the 1840s. However, when war broke out between the U.S. and Mexico, he commanded Mexican Army. They ended up losing a lot of lands after they were defeated.

    He was president for two more years, starting in 1853. In late 1853, he sold land to the Americans which was known as the Gadsden Purchase. However, the Mexicans turned on him once again for doing that.

    For the years that followed, he planned getting back to power. He tried many ways, but he ended back into exile.During this he lived in places such as, the U.S., Cuba, the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas.

    Finally, in 1874 he returned to Mexico. He was able to return due to him not being in exile anymore. By then he was around 80 and had no hope of power.
