The labor movement led efforts to stop child labor, give health benefits and provide aid to workers who were injured or retired. -

Changes After the US civil War
econstruction (1865-1877), the turbulent era following the Civil War, was the effort to reintegrate Southern states from the Confederacy and 4 million newly-freed people into the United States. Under the administration of President Andrew Johnson in 1865 and 1866, new southern state legislatures passed restrictive “Black Codes” to control the labor and behavior of former enslaved people and other African Americans. -

While a revolutionary crowd gathers outside the Iolani palace gates on January 14, 1893, Queen Liliuokalani is forced to relinquish control of the Hawaiian government. With the Queen dethroned, years of political turmoil would follow until Hawaii was officially annexed to the United States in 1898. -
