  • Christopher Latham Sholes

    Christopher Latham Sholes
Christopher Latham Sholes invented the typewriter in 1867 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He invented it so people are able to write papers faster. The typewriter moves as you type each letter. Then, when it reaches the end of the line, you just push it back and start a new one. It made him successful because he was able to think of something that made writing papers so much easier and so much faster. Many people bought it so they didn’t have to write everything by hand anymore. (next box)

When more and more people bought it, he earned more and more money which kept him and the invention successful. http://www.ideafinder.com/history/inventors/sholes.htm

  • The Escalator

    The Escalator
The escalator was invented in New York City, New York by Jesse W. Reno in 1891. It was invented so people can move a short distance quickly. Reno used his knowledge of how conveyor belts worked and used his knowledge of stairs and combined them so they turned into moving stairs. The invention was successful since many people had to use it when they are going to work (if they are in the city) or going to their plane, especially if they are running late. (next box)
  • The Game of Basketball

    The Game of Basketball
The game of basketball was invented on December 21st, 1891 by James Naismith at a school he taught Phy. Ed. in. It was called the YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) which was located in Springfield, Massachusetts. It was invented so that his students could play an indoor sport during the cold winters of Massachusetts. As a gym teacher, he knew a lot about the sports that already existed. Especially since he's known about them from his childhood up. (next box)

So, he took his knowledge that he already had on how sports that use a ball work. He applied it to this new sport by nailing peach baskets to the wall 10 ft. in the air and throwing a soccer ball in it. Instead of just needing strength, this sport also need finesse and accuracy. Video:

  • Will Keith Kellogg

    Will Keith Kellogg
Will Keith Kellogg invented Corn Flakes in 1894 at Battle Creek Sanitarium (San) in Battle Creek, Michigan. Will didn't try to invent Corn Flakes, it was an accident. He and his brother were trying to make digestible bread to improve the vegetarian diets of the patients of San. He accidentally let the wheat boil for too long and they turned into flakes but he decided to keep them and told his older brother to try them and sell them. (next box)

This invention made him successful by him thinking outside the box and not just throwing something away that he messed up on. He tried to build on that. Unlike many other people, he made a mistake that he didn’t just get rid of and start over. He thought that it might work so he tried a little harder to make it successful. The patients ended up really liking it and on top of that, it was very healthy. http://www.ideafinder.com/history/inventors/kellogg.htm
