  • Jamestown

    The first permanent English settlement in North American, Jamestown, was established in 1607
  • House of Burgesses

    The House of Burgesses became the first representative assembly in the colonies in 1619 preparing the colonists for a more representative government in the future
  • Slavery comes to America

    In 1619 a slave ship owned by the Dutch sold twenty slaves to colonists in Virginia which began slavery in the South which would later result in a great conflict known as the Civil War.
  • Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay beginning New England

    In 1620 Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay were founded by the British beginning their claim in the New England territory
  • New Amsterdam founded

    The Dutch founded New Amsterdam in 1625 on Manhattan island to maintain a greater appearance in their region known as New Netherland of North America
  • Rhode Island and Connecticut added to New England

    In 1636, Rhode Island and Connecticut joined Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay to expand the New England possession
  • Maryland passes Toleration Act

    In 1649 Maryland passed the Toleration Act which permitted religious freedom in their state because Catholics had not be accepted as much as Protestants had been in English colonies because Great Britain was a Protestant nation. This would prepare the colonists to have freedom of religion across all the colonies when the Constitution was created
  • England aquires New Netherland

    Not long after the Dutch had begun to make their presence in North America, they had to give Britain their entire North American possession
  • King Philip's War

    Britain's New England, particularly Massachusetts, were threatened by Native Americans led by Metacom, also known as King Philip, who nearly succeeded before eventually having to fight against fellow Indians resulting in his death ending the war. This war resulted in a depopulation of and massive hatred towards Indians in British America.
  • Pennsylvania added to British possession

    William Penn founded Pennsylvania in 1682 further adding to the British expansion of North America
  • Massachusetts uses paper bills

    In 1690 Massachusetts became the first in the Western World to use paper bills showing that these colonies are progressing economically and becoming more independent with that.
