    Jefferson persuaded congress to pass the Embargo Act in 1807, which prohibited U.S. merchant vessles from engaging in foreign trade. His hope was that Britain and France would be crippled economically by the loss of U.S. trade and would be forced to respect his country.

    In the year 1808, the US slave trade with Africa ends. That was a part of the 3/5ths compromise. Along with the end of slae trade, the three fifths compromise declared taxes could be put on imports but not exports, and that slaves counted as three fifths of a person as a member of the population.
