  • Hassan's first words

    When Hassan first speaks his words are, "Amir" (11). Hassan's first words show that he puts Amir above anything and anyone else. The fact that Hassan's first words are to Amir show how Hassan will sacrifice things he has to try keep Amir close forever.

    When Hassan's birthday rolls around Baba gives him a different gift than usual when he says, "'I have summoned Dr. Kumar from New Delhi. Dr. Kumar is a plastic surgeon"'(45). Baba shows his unusually close relationship with his servant. This can later be used as foreshadowing on who Hassan really is.

    A very important part of the story is when "In the winter of 1975, I saw Hassan run a kite for the first time"(55). This is the first time Amir gets a taste of what Baba's approval is like and that's what leads him to want more and eventually betray Hassan.

When Baba asks "Did you steal that money?Did you steal Amir's watch, Hassan?'...'Yes'"(105). This is very important as it will set up many things to happen in the book and it is why Amir will risk his wonderful life in America later on.

    When the Soviet Union come in with their tanks Amir says, "It was the beginning of the end" (36). This is shown when Amir travels back to Afghanistan and sees his childhood home and everything he knew destroyed.

    During Baba's funeral a man in the crown yelled, "'...helped me build the house in Taimani...''...bless him...''...no one else to turn to and he lent me...''...found me a job...barely knew him...''...like a brother to me..."'(Hosseini 174). Baba impacted many Afghan lives in the community. He left a major mark on many and that is why they are so grateful for him.

    Hassan's wife ""Sanaubar who delivered Hassan's son that winter in 1990"(211). The birth of Hassan's child is the only reason amir will atone for his guilt and sins for the legacy of his dear friend.

    Amir meets a wonderful girl and as he's getting married her well respected father kindly says, "Amir jan, as for you, I welcome you to my home as a son, as the husband of my daughter who is noor of my eye...I pray for your love and our lovely Soraya jan's happiness"(168). Soraya's father accepts Amir with open arms into his family yet there is still one thing bothering Amir

    Amir sees Assef is the member of the Taliban who took Hassan's child and Assef says, "'I wonder,' Assef said. 'I wonder why you've come all this way, Amir, come all this way for a Hazara? Why are you here?"'(284).

    The horrible things in his life have caused Sohrab to be sucidal we know this when he says, "I want my old life back"(354).

    While talking with Rahim Kahn Amir figures out that "Rahim Khan's dying wish was for Amir to go back to Kabul, and get Sohrab, Hassan's son, and bring him to an American couple, Mr. and Mrs. Caldwell, who would then take care of him."(220). This is doing Amir a big favour giving him his last chance to atone by saving Hassan's only child.

    Amir travels to Kabul after his old friend Rahim Kahn calls him and tells says, "Come, there is a way to be good again"(192). Amir realizes this is what he has to do if he ever wants to be happy but soon after going he realizes Kabul is not the same.

This completes a full circle of the events in the book with Amir saying to Hassan's son what Hassan had said to him.
