Congress created the Arkansas territory out of the Territory of Missouri after Missouri petitioned for statehood. That line is the northern portion of the present boundary between Arkansas and Oklahoma. A treaty made with the Choctaw in 1825 created the southern portion of the Arkansas-Oklahoma line. -
Congress approves the Missouri Compromise
The Missouri Compromise was passed in 1820 to preserve the balance of power in Congress between slave and free states admitting Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state. In 1854, the Missouri Compromise was repealed by the Kansas-Nebraska Act. This is important for the history to be known from today.
