  • spanish flu

    As soldiers returned home the country was hit by and epidemic - "spanish flu". The soldiers carried the virus from overseas, soon the virus ravaged countries around the world. People tryed to stop the spread of the flu by closing schools, churches. About 50,000 Canadians died, about 21 million people died world wide.
  • prohibition

    The Government introduced prohibition in 1918, banning imports of liquor. People bought "bootleg booze" which was illegal liquor made and sold by bootleggers. smuggling took place across the Qubec border into Main, New Hampshire, Vermont and the shores of lake Ontario and lake Erie.

    Aboriginal nations had a hard time to keep their cultures and have their rights reconized. The Government wanted Aboriginal nations to give up their tradition ways and get into the canadaian culture.

    in the 1920s, the Americans introduced the branch plant system. these branch industries were copies of the American parent company. They produced the same product as the parent company in the states, but marked the produce as "made in canada", they did this so they could get extra money.

    Over a million people had diabetes in 1921 and at the time no one knew what caused it or how to treat it. since no one knew about it thousands died each year.

    On July 1, 1923, Canada passed the chinese exclusion act, this act banned all chinese except students, merchants and diplomats from entering Canada. From 1923 to 1947 when the eact repealed, only eight chinese people were admitted to Canada

    Henry Ford dreamed of making an inexpenisive car the almost anyone could afford. Henry decided to manufacture a mass production of his cars. The assembly line started with a frame then slowly made its way to the other side of the building where it would come out as a ford model t.

    Members of the group of seven were determined to create art that had to do with the Canadian experience. They took their inspirations from the Canadian landscape. The paintings the group of seven protrayed Canada as a land of spectacular open spaces, rivers, lakes and forests.

    Persons case underlined the inequality of women and although the women won the right to vote during the war, few women were elected to the house of commons. people thought that women were not able to lead a position such as something to do witht the government so women were not allowed.

    black tuesday is the day the stock market crashed, it was one of the most dramatic events signalling the depression. many lost huge amounts of money and put some poeple in more depression.
  • 5 cent speech

    during the beginning of the great depression, king made a speech about how social welfare was the responsibility of the provinces. he also declared that he would not give a "five cent speech" to any province that did not have a liberal government.
  • cbc is formed

    in 1933, the government created the canadian radio broadcasting commission. it was made to keep up with the American domination of the air waves, and to encourage the groth of canadian programs. in 1936, the commission became the canadian broadcasting corporation.
