    At the age of seven Sara's parents died of yellow fever which left her orphaned. To escape being caught in the yellow fever out break she and her older sister which ended up raising her moved to Vicksburg.

Also during this year she invented a methosd of straightening african american type "kinky" hair which would become very popular. This meathod included using her home made pomade, lots of brushing, and the use of a heated comb. It is a misconception that Sara invented the heated comb she DID NOT however, she DID make it very popular throughout the black commmunity.

    married a newspaper worker named Charles joseph Walker. Later on he helps sara advertise her products in news papers. And he is also reponsible for giving Sara her very famous nick name Madam C.J. Walker.
