8.4 Rights & Resist Timeline

  • American Revolution

    American Revolution
    The Americans revolted because they were being heavily taxed and had no representation in British government. The war took place in the United States and the Americans were the first to attack. It was successful because the United States then became an independent country and its citizens had more say in the government.
  • French Revolution

    French Revolution
    The third estate of France was fighting the other two for life, liberty, and property. The war took place in France and the third estate was the first to attack. While the Revolution was successful in the short term, it was very long and bloody.
  • Venezuelan Revolution

    Venezuelan Revolution
    Venezuela fought for independence from Spain for economic liberty and to abolish slavery. The war was in Venezuela and the people of Venezuela were the first to attack. The revolution was successful until 1814 when Spain regained its own independence and took back control of its colonies, including Venezuela, reinstating everything the Venezuelans works so hard to get rid of.
  • Mexican Revolution

    Mexican Revolution
    Mexico fought to gain independence from Spain because they were being unjustly taxed and overall oppressed. It took place in Mexico and it was the Mexican who attacked first. This first revolution was unsuccessful but Mexico did win it’s independence from Spain in 1821.
  • Philippine-American War

    Philippine-American War
    The Philippines fought the United States because they were seeking independence. The war took place in the Philippines and the people native to the island were the aggressors. Their revolt sadly did not work as the United States Army was able to subdue their guerrilla forces just two years later.
  • Indian Independence

    Indian Independence
    India did not fight England but rather boycotted English goods. The people of India wanted to govern their own country. The boycotts took place in India, I guess England would be the aggressor even though there was no conflict. It was successful, but it took a long time, nearly 50 years, for India to win its independence.
