    Coolie was a bad name for a Chinese person. The Anit Coolie Act limited immigration of the Chinese so they could not come to the U.S. and take the railroad jobs.

    This was the off term election year for congress. The American party, The Know-Nothings, wanted to scare immigrants out of hte country by beating them up.
