    In late 1606 the Virginia Company sent out 3 ships. They landed in late spring of 1607. They were then attacked by indians and officially settled in may.

    Salutary Neglect

    During this time, England colonized the new world and plagued by internal conflicts left the colonists to fend for themselves mostly. Therefore they expected to be left that way forever.
  • The Massachusetts Bay Colony

    group of nonseparatists recieved a royal charter to form the Mass. bay colony. They were meant to be a city on a hill as John Winthrop said. He was the governor

    New England Confederation

    Formed by the New England colonies to protect themselves form outsiders and to solve border disputes. They had a band to fight in unity in king Pillips war against the indians.
  • Charleston was settled

    The settlers came from the West Indies and brought salvery. This city was named for king Charles the second. It was made as a buffer to florida, but it was also made for economic hopes.
  • Bacon's Rebellion

    Nathanial Bacon lead 1000 in a revolt against governor berkley. They attcked indians, drove governor berkley from jamestown, burned capitial. Then the 50 rebellers were burned
  • Penn Settled Pennsylvannia

    Penn was given the land that is now Pennsylvannia by the king. He then advertised all over for people to come settle in Pensylvannia, making it very diverse. The government of Pennsylvannia was representative with white landowning male sufferage.

    NC and SC separated due to such differences in the states and because the owners had a dispute

    Great Awakening

    Religious awakening in the new world in which preacher preached hell and resulted in splits in denominations, new interests in religion, colleges and a questioning in authority.
  • Proclamation Act

    Prohibited settlement west of the App Mts in order to control colonists more. The colonists reacted mildly because they thought tha the act was temporary and beause it could easily be broken.
  • Sugar/Revenue Act

    The purpose of this act was to raise money to pay off Britains war debt from the French and Indian war. It taxed sugar and molasses. However, the administrative costs to enforce the law cost more than they made and they lost a lot of money due to smugglers.
  • Currency Act

    Passed by the English. It ended the printing of colonial money and said that taxes had to be paid in Speci.
  • Townshend Acts imposed

    The purpose was to make money. It was a tax the Britian imposed on lead, paint, glass and tea. They wanted to use the money they made to put the British government and officals on the English payroll. The colonists thought that this act was better than the other acts imposed because the taxes were being used in the colonies.
  • Tea Act enacted

    the purpose of the tea act was to save the British East India company from bankrupcy. It gave them monopoly in the colonies,put a three pence tax on tea and put colonists merchants out of business. The colonists were enraged by this and many ports wouldn't allow the tea to come in so it was sent back the England. The Boston Tea party was a result of this.
  • Boston tea Party

    Since the governor refused to make the ships with the taxed tea arrived in boston, the members of the Sons of Liberty dressed as indians and dumped 10,000 pounds of tea into the Boston habor. This really angered the British government.
  • Boston Port Act

    This was the first of the intolerable acts that were passed to punish Boston for the tea party. It shut down the Boston Port by blockading it with war ships
  • Quebec Act

    This act was made to control colonists in the Ohio river Valley. The British extended Quebec canada to the Ohio River Valley. This put it in more allied British control.
  • First Continental Congress

    Called for nonimportation agreements with Britain, nonexportation agreements with britain and a declaration of rights. It was called for by the Commitees of Correspondance.
  • Second Continental Congress

    They met and proposed a treaty with the indians, named Washington as the leader of the army and appointed Benedict Arnold and Montgomery to attack Canada.
  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    Colonists were declared as the winners but both sides lost a lot of men.

  • Declaration Of Independence

    the continental convention declared independence from Britian. The declaration of independence, written mostly by Thomas Jefferson, was signed by the delegrates.
  • Battle of Saratoga

    This was a battle in the revolutionary war and occurred in NY. It is considered the turning point in the war for the norhtern campaign. This is because it was after this battle the French decided to alline themselves with the colonies.
  • Battle of Camden

    The leader of this battle was Gates. The British won and Gates fled the battle. So, he was replaced as leader of the southern campaign by Greene.
  • Battle of Kings Mountain

    This battle was Nathaniel Greene's first battle as leader. It was a huge win by the colonists and a huge loss of life for Britain. It was also considered the turning point in the southern campaigns.
  • Cowpens

    This battle was an overwhelming victory for the colonists and their leader was Greene
  • Battle of Guilfors courthouse

    Occurred in NC. The colonists were lead by Greene in this battle. The British were considered the winners because the colonists retreated but they lost more soldiers. Then when Cornwallis went to get supplies in VA he was forced to surrender by Washington and the French Navy
  • Treaty of Paris

    It set the mississippi river as the Western boundary, recognized america independence and said the British would evecute forts in the NW. It was made by the provisions in the Articles of Confederacy.
  • Annapolis convention

    This convention was called by Virginia as a meeting to edit the Articles of Confederation. However, the convention was unsuccessful because only 5 colonies attended. It was then proposed that they meet in Philidelphia to revise it at a later date.

    Constitutional Convention

    Met in Philidelphia in 1787 to revise the Acrticles of Conferacy. It was attended by young guys that had fairly similiar ideas about the government.

    The constitution was signed by all of the colonies and was law after this date.

    The National bank was the first bank in the US and was created by Hamilton. It was where all of the federal funds were held and stocks were sold to the public. When it began it held 10million dollars.

    Whiskey Rebellion

    The Whiskey rebellion occured in Western Pennslyvania and was a result of the excise tax on whiskey. The farmers protested ans refused to pay the tax. To deal with this Washington rounded up between 13000 and 15000 soldiers. This was an overreaction because when he got there pretty much everyone was disbursed.
  • Citizen Genet Affair

    A French offical came to the US and tried to take over Louisiana. He was then forced to leave the country by George Washington
  • Jay's Treaty

    This treaty was written by John Jay. It basically just restated everything from the Treaty of Paris. The republicans didn't like this treaty or John Jay because they thought it was too pro British.
  • battle of Fallen Timbers

    This battle was against the the Miami Confederation because there was conflict on colonists settling in the Miami region. The colonists were led by Mad Anthony Wayne and they defeated the Miami confederation
  • Treaty of Greenville

    It marked the ending of the battle of Fallen Timbers. It forced the Miami condeferation to give up land and they were given a designated area to live in. The Miami Confederation were given 20000 for Ohio
  • Pinckney's Treaty

    Spanish thought that Jay's treaty was a secret allience with Britain and they wanted to be protected so they decided to sign Pinckney's treaty which granted us the rights to use the port of New Orleans.
  • Adams becomes President

    Although he wasn't well liked as a person he won the election in 1797 with 71 electorial votes. He wanted a strong executive branch, and wanted to serve the people rather than deal with party politics.
  • Convention of 1800

    The Convention of 1800 was between France and the US. It's purpose was to ease the tension between the countries and to end the US treaty with France. It also set up a trade treaty with France. In this convention France gives up Louisiana to Spain.
  • Thomas Jefferson Becomes President

    Thomas Jefferson was the third president and was from Virginia.
    During his presidency he was at his home, Monticello, more than the capital. He preferred state power to central power and founded the republican party. In the election he tied with William Burr and so the House of Representatives had to chos ethe president. Since Hamilton put his support behind him, Jefferson won. His election was know as the Revolution of 1800.
  • Marbury vs. Madison

    As Madison was leaving office he created Judicial positions that didn't exist and filled them with his federalist buddies. Judge Marbury sued because he hadn't recieved a message he was supposed to. This case developed the idea od judicial review.
  • The Louisiana Purchase

    Spanish signed a treaty that gave Louisiana to France and the US really didn't want this. Therefore we sent some representatives to France to try to get Louisiana back. Napolean decided that it was no longer useful to him so he sold it to the US for 15 million dollars.
  • Chesapeake Incident

    This was an incident where a US ship was in sight of the shore and a British ship attacked it and borded it. They took 3 hostages: a african american, a british deserter and someone born in Maryland. For a lot of people in America this was enough for war, but not Jefferson.
  • Embargo of 1807

    Jefferson signed this in response to the impressment by the British. It stopped all foreign trade for the US. A lot of people didn't like this because it hurt the American economy and some people didn't follow because they smuggled.
