    Louisiana purchase
    Thomas Jefferson wanted to buy the land outside of New Orleans. Napoleon (the emperor of France at the time ignored his request. Until he found himself amongst a war with the Haitians, and he needed money to fund the war. So he agreed to sell not just what Jefferson asked for but the whole Louisiana territory. For fifteen million dollars that’s about four cents per acre. This was important because it nearly doubled the size of America the land also contained valuable gold, silver and ores.

    Corps of Discovery
    The corps of discovery had three goals to make friends, to map out the land and to find a northwest passage. The main leaders of the group were Lewis and Clark. They brought along a girl on their trip name d Sacagawea who was an Indian that helped them in many ways. She was a translator to many Indian tribes. She made the group seem more harmless. She at one point saved Lewis and Clark’s journals. Although they did not find a northwest passage they did make it through the Louisiana Purchase.

    The war of 1812 also known as the war of poor communication was when the Americans and the British. It lasted 2 and a half years. It was known as the war of poor communication because there was a treaty signed to end the war before they started but they did not know that so they fought anyway. There was no real winner but it did give us a sense of pride. It was seen as the “second war of independence”.

    Andrew Jackson invaded Florida which at the time was an unorganized Spanish territory. He won the fight and signed the adams-onis treaty. Which settled a burden of disputes between Spain and the United States. Spanish sold it for five million dollars. Andrew Jackson also took it upon himself to overthrow the Spanish governor and taking over several forts. Although Andrew Jackson was unauthorized to conquer the Florida territory we might not have it today if it weren’t for him.

    The Monroe Doctrine
    The Monroe doctrine was established so that other countries wouldn’t take the land from America. We basically made a barrier between us and the whole eastern hemisphere. We did not want to deal with any affairs having to do with the Europeans. We were to control all of the trading with South America. We ended up taking it down and are now able to trade with anyone. But at the time we did not want to lose any land to the Europeans.

    Indian removal act and trail of tears
    The Indians were forced out of their homes by order of President Andrew Jackson. To make room for the incoming settlers some would consider him a hero or a villain because he might have been thinking about the Indians and warning them about how the settlers were going to come even if the liked it or not and move them from their land. The trail of tears in a reference to the path that the Indians took westward and all of the people that died on that trail.

    Texas
    Texas used to be part of Mexico but it broke away to become the republic of Texas. This happened over a long time. First they fought Santana for their freedom once they won then they became their own republic Texas. While they were the republic they asked us as America to join the union we agreed under some conditions we took some on the land from Texas ant some of that is what is now Oklahoma.

    Mexican American War and the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
    The Mexicans and the Americans had a war over the California area and what was around it the treaty ending this war was called the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. We won the war and Mexico gave up much of California, Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico to the .U.S. Once they signed the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Guadalupe Hidalgo is a city north of the capital where the Mexican government had fled with the advance of U.S. forces
  • Oregon Territory

    Oregon Territory
    The U.S. and the British both claimed the Oregon territory. So they had to compromise over the land. This territory was located between 42 N latitude and 54 40’ N latitude. James. K. Polk wanted to go to war over it and even used it as a slogan in his campaign "54 40 or fight" referring to the latitude of the land that he wanted to claim for the .U.S. Polk won the election and mostly stuck to his promise by making a compromise at the 49 mark.
