    Eugene V. Debs

    Debs was the U.S. Socialist party president nominee 5 different times, yet never won. He was important because he was the founder of Industrial Workers of the World and started a lot of strikes against inhumane labour unions.

    Jim Crow Laws

    These laws allowed and required the segregation of people based on their race. This was important because it was a pivotal time in America, teaching us that this was incorrect so we don't do it again. It was also one of the key parts of the Civil Rights movement.
  • Chinese Exclusion Act

    This was an act that was passed that prohibited the immigration of Chinese workers to America. It was the first act to be passed that restricted the immigration of a specific group of people.
  • Sinking of the Lusitania

    The Lusitania was a British boat on its way to England that got torpedoed by a German U-boat. This was important because it made Germany announce unrestricted submarine warfare.
  • Zimmerman Telegram

    This was important because it exposed Germany for trying to bribe Mexico into allying with them in exchange for land back from the United States.
  • Sedition Act

    This act made it a crime to speak or write anything bad about the U.S. government. This was important because it restricted people's freedom of speech so that the government wouldn't be attacked by it's citizens during the war.
  • 18th Amendment

    "After one year from the ratification of this article the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors within, the importation thereof into, or the exportation thereof from the United States and all territory subject to the jurisdiction thereof for beverage purposes is hereby prohibited." This amendment made the production and selling of alcohol to become illegal. This caused crime in America, people selling alcohol on the black market and in speakeasies.

    "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex." This made it possible for women to vote in the United States, opening up a whole new world of opportunities and opinions.
  • Immigration Act of 1924

    This act reduced the number of immigrants allowed to come into the United States down to 2%. This was important because it helped with our overpopulation, but restricted a lot of people looking for freedom.
  • John Scopes - Monkey Trial

    The Monkey Trial was about a substitute teacher who refused to teach about the "divine creation of man" and taught about evolution instead.
  • 20th Amendment

    "The terms of the President and Vice President shall end at noon on the 20th day of January, and the terms of Senators and Representatives at noon on the 3rd day of January, of the years in which such terms would have ended if this article had not been ratified; and the terms of their successors shall then begin." This gave an exact cut off time and date for when a President's term would be over, as well as Congressmen.

    "The eighteenth article of amendment to the Constitution of the United States is hereby repealed." This made it legal for alcohol to be produced and sold again.

    The Red Scare was the fear of communism coming to America. The Communists were known as the "Reds" because of the Soviet flag. This was important because it caused people to support the war effort against the Communists.
