    On this day, Winter Quarters Mine exploded, killing over 200 people. It is thought that coal dust caused the explosion. (FUN FACT: My Great Grandfather worked there, and was transferred to another mine two or three days before the explosion. He was also the second man to go back in the mine after the explosion).
