  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    -The Missouri Compromise of 1820 was an agreement made by Congress to allow Missouri into the Union as a slave state and Maine as a free state
    -This was important in maintaining the balance of free and slave states
  • Monroe Doctrine

    Monroe Doctrine
    -The Monroe Doctrine was a policy made by James Monroe stating that Europe could not colonize in the Americas and the U.S. would not bother any existing European colonies
    -It was made because of concern that Prussia, Russia, and Austria's alliance would extend into the West
    -It was important in recognizing that they were separate countries who did not have special powers or privileges over each other

    Trail of Tears

    -The Trail of Tears was the relocations of tribes like the Cherokee enforced by Andrew Jackson.
    -The Natives were forced to walk through harsh conditions with heavy packs on their packs all the way to Oklahoma.
    -Many died, especially of disease and starvation.

    -This is significant because it showed that the Natives had absolutely no power.
    -Jackson’s enthusiasm and eagerness to take the Natives’ land proved him to be a dark and cruel President.

    -The Battle of the Alamo was a fight in the Texas Revolution against Mexico. The Texians lost at the the third attack.
    -This battle was important because it wasn’t a big victory for the Mexicans considering they lost over half of their troops, and the defenders were proud of their bravery against them.

    Panic of 1837

    -The Panic of 1837 was a crisis of financial and economic recession. this occurred after Andrew Jackson’s Specie Circular collapsed banks and dried up credit.
    -it left a significant impact by causing a seven year Great Depression
  • Sutter's Fort

    -Sutter’s Fort was the first non-indigenous trade and agricultural settlement in California.
    -It was important as a way station for people and it provided aid to the Donner Party.
  • Preemption Act

    -the Preemption Act allowed the first settlers, called squatters, to purchase the land they were living on before it was put up for auction.
    -this was important because it gave them a chance to keep the land they had improved before it was sold by the government.
  • Bear Flag Revolt

    -the Bear Flag Revolt was when a small group of Americans in California were inspired by John C. Fremont to rebel against Mexico’s government.
    -this bloodless battle at Mexico’s Sonoma outpost was crucial to beginning the independence movement.

    -U.S. President James K. Polk, who believed the United States had a “manifest destiny” to spread across the continent to the Pacific Ocean.
    -Mexico had lost about one-third of its territory, including nearly all of present-day California, Utah, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico.
    -Importance was the expansion of the US
  • Fugitive Slave Law

    -the fugitive slave law forced citizens to assist in the capture and return of slaves as well as enforced worse punishments for interfering.
    -it was important because it reinforced abolitionists’ passion, and many measures were taken to avoid the law and help the slaves.
  • Compromise of 1850

    -The Compromise of 1850 was an agreement that appealed to both the North and the South because the North received California as another free state and the South benefited from the amending of the Fugitive Slave Law.
    -It was important in achieving the goal of a peaceful Union.
  • Gadsden Purchase

    -the Gadsden Purchase was an agreement between the US and Mexico agreeing to give Mexico $10 million for the land which became Arizona and New Mexico.
    -This purchase helped resolve remaining issues after the Mexican-American War and allowed for the creation of a railroad in that area.

    -Bleeding Kansas was a violent time following the Kansas-Nebraska Act
    -It was a debate between pr slavery activists and "Free Staters" in the new state, Kansas
    -The importance of Kansas is that it is a dispute between anti-slavery and slavery supporters which led to the first battles of the Civil War
  • Dred Scott Decision

    -Dred Scott was a slave who believed he should be free after spending time in free states.
    -The court came to the decision that he was not considered a person under the Constitution, he was rather a possession.
    -This was significant in encouraging a reaction from people against slavery and being a step towards starting the Civil War.
  • Harper's Ferry

    Harper's Ferry
    -a key site in an 1859 abolitionist raid
    -on October 16, 1859, the abolitionist John Brown led a group of 21 men in a raid on the arsenal. Five of the men were black: three free black men, one a freed slave and one a fugitive slave.
    -it was important in that it fueled the war

    -all of the states that seceded after South Carolina were just following their lead and wanting to keep their slaves

  • Emancipation Proclamation

    -The Emancipation Proclamation was an executive order freeing slaves who were not in the Union
    -it it stated it would only free slaves in Confederate states but moved towards the freeing of all slaves
    -the proclamation led the way towards fighting for freedom and reaching the abolition of slavery as well as saving the Union

    -Gettysburg is the site of the Battle of Gettysburg and the Gettysburg Address given by Lincoln
    -Where the bloodiest battle of the Civil War occurred
    -Each of the three days of the Battle of Gettysburg rank in the top 15 bloodiest battles of the Civil War and it was very costly and large
  • Gettysburg Address

    Gettysburg Address
    -the Gettysburg Address is a speech by Abraham Lincoln in honor of the fallen soldiers of the Battle of Gettysburg
    -it is known as a very impactful speech despite its short length
    -its significance was showing people that the battle had a purpose and it strengthened the Union
  • 14th Amendment

    14th Amendment
    -an amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1868, defining national citizenship and forbidding the states to restrict the basic rights of citizens or other persons
    -important in giving equal rights for all
  • 13th Amendment

    13th Amendment
    -Ended Slavery in the United States
    -Passed by Congress on January 31, 1865, and ratified on December 6, 1865
    -this was important because it secured the equality of humans
  • 15th Amendment

    15th Amendment
    -The Fifteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibits the federal and state governments from denying a citizen the right to vote based on that citizen's "race, color, or previous condition of servitude".
    -Passed by Congress on February 26, 1869, and ratified February 3, 1870, the 15th amendment granted African American men the right to vote
    -Importance is all men can vote
