The Beatles appear on Ed Sullivan for the first time
Never before had so many viewers tuned-in to a live tv program, which with 73 million viewers. Sullivan gave his now-famous intro, “Ladies and gentlemen…the Beatles!” and after a few seconds of a cheering from the audience, the band kicked into “All My Lovin’.” The Beatles would receive $10,000 for their three appearances and top billing. -
34 people die in Watts ghetto riot
Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles is where it all started. Two white policemen fought with a black man suspected of drunken driving. A crowd come to watch the arrest but soon grew angry by what they believed to be yet another racial attack from the police. A five day they rioted by looting stores, torching buildings, and beating whites as snipers fired at police and firefighters. -
Assassination of Martin Luther King
U.S. civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. had been assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee by James Earl Ray. At the age of 39 King was shot on second-floor balcony of the Lorraine Motel by a sniper. King died an hour later from the bullet. -
