U.S History 1955-1975

  • NASA was founded

    After the Russians launched the first man-made satellite into space, the United States established the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Its purpose was to help the United States to win the space race.
  • 35th President of the United States

    John Kennedy ran against Richard Nixon and Kennedy won the election. He was president during the Cuban Missile Crisis, to which he brought a peaceful end.
  • Bay of Pigs

    The Bay of Pigs was an attempt to overthrow the government in Fidel Castro by the United States. They trained a large number of Cuban exiles, but it ended with them getting captured and killed.
  • Building of the Berlin Wall

    The Berlin Wall was built to prevent people from escaping East Berlin to West Berlin. East Berlin was controlled by the Soviet Union which meant they were under communism. People found it miserable, so they escaped to West Berlin, which was controlled by the United States.
  • The Cuban Missile Crisis

    With the discovery of Missles in Cuba, President Kennedy put a naval blockade to prevent any ships from importing goods into Cuba. Khrushchev, the Soviet leader, took this as an act of aggression. This was the closest thing to the annihilation of the United States. Eventually, both Kennedy and Khrushchev would come to an agreement to have the missiles removed from Cuba.
  • Assassination of President Kennedy

    While President Kennedy was driving through the streets of Dallas, he was shot in the head by a sniper. People still debate whether it was alone sniper or a conspiracy group.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination in the workplace, public facilities, voting laws, and federal funding based on sex, race, and religion.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Assassination

    Martin Luther King Jr. was staying in Memphis because he was attending a protest with sanitation workers. He was shot on the balcony of his hotel room with Samuel Kyles next to him.
  • Mood Landing

    Apollo 11 brought two astronauts to the moon. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first men to walk on the moon.
  • 26th Amendment

    The 26th Amendment gave 18-year-olds or older the right to vote
