  • Emmett Till Murdered

    After a white woman accused him of making inappropriate comments to her at her family's grocery store, Emmett Till was dragged from his family members house in the middle of the night. His body was later found mutilated.
  • Rosa Parks

    Rosa Parks famously refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white passenger. While not the first black who had done this, activists rallied around Parks and used her story to help their cause.
  • Sputnik 1

    The Soviets send Sputnik 1, the world's first man made satellite into orbit.
