  • Founding of Jamestown

  • The Boston Public Latin School was founded.

  • Founding of New York

    Dutch Governor Peter Stuyvesant surrenders New Amsterdam to an English naval squadron. The English changed the name to New York and thus became the Big Apple as we know it.
  • King Philip's War

    Also known as Metacom's Rebellion, this war effort marked the last major effort by the Indians of southern New England to drive out the English settlers. The war ended in August 1676, shortly after Metacom was captured and beheaded.
  • Salem Witch Trials

    A series of hearings and prosecutions of people accusing each other of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts. More than 200 people were accused, nineteen of whom were found guilty and executed by hanging.
